To get a friend code, go to the big gate at the top of the town, then talk to the dog on the left. Select 'Friend Code' and he will issue you one.

jail in anger: Go to the town gate and talk to one of the guards there. One of the options will be to see your friend code, which you can then give to your real world friends. You will also need their friend codes.
