One of Yahoo’s best free online games is Pop n Drop. The objective of Pop n Drop is very simple: players shoot colored balls upward at the group of balls already on the field. By matching at least three balls of the same color, they eliminate those balls from the board. The objective is to delete all the balls on the board before they are pushed down to the bottom.
How to Play Pop n Drop
Pop n Drop is one of those games that’s incredibly easy to learn, but very difficult to master. You control the firing angle of the ball, aiming it with your mouse pointer at the slowly-moving group of balls on the board. The object is to shoot the ball so that it sticks to another ball of the same color. If you stick the ball so that it lands on a group of two or more balls of the same color, all of those balls vanish from the board. Even better, if there are other colored balls attached to only the group of balls that just vanished, they will vanish as well. One trick to doing this is to bounce the ball off the side of the board, allowing you to get your ball to stick on a group further up. A level is over once all the balls are cleared from the board.
Special Items
There are four special items that come into play in Pop n Drop, although players won’t see some of them until they hit the higher levels.
Blockerball
The Blockerball is an annoying little black ball that appears on the board at the beginning of the game. The only way to get rid of it is to take out all the balls above it, causing it to fall off the board once its supports are gone. Blockerballs can also be destroyed by grenades, but since you have a limited number of them, you’ll probably want to save them. Blockerballs are unaffected by Rodar Rador.
Spring
Springs appear on the board at the beginning of the game as well. If you hit the spring with a ball, it will vanish and push the balls back upward. This gives you more time to clear away the board. Because they vanish, and so few of them appear, you should time your use of the Springs so you don’t waste the extra time they give.
Rodar Rador
The Rodar Rador appears as a ball you can shoot onto the board. It looks like a swirling mass of different colors, and when you shoot it, it changes the group of balls it hits to the same color as the balls closest to it. Basically, it creates giant groups of the same color that only need that one extra ball to get rid of them.
Grenades
The Grenade is a special item that players can use any time. It completely destroys a group of balls, regardless of their color, and is the only thing that can destroy a Blockerball. However, players only get three Grenades per game, so they should use them wisely.
Pop n Drop Gameplay
The graphics of Pop n Drop are nothing special, but then again, when the game is made up of different colored balls, they don’t need to be. They’re adequate for the game; in fact, flashier graphics would probably be too distracting for a game like ‘’Pop n Drop’’. The sounds, too, are simple, with a noise played when a ball sticks to another or when a group of balls falls off the board.
Conclusion
If you enjoy puzzle games with a timer, Pop n Drop is probably a good game for you. It’s fun, kind of mindless, and requires no time at all to pick up. Yes, it will probably get repetitive after awhile, but not so repetitive that you won’t find yourself playing it again in a few days. If you use Yahoo! Messenger a lot and remember to sign in to Pop n Drop before playing, you can go to Messenger’s Games tab and see how your Pop n Drop score matches up to your friends. Becoming the Pop n Drop champion of your friends list provides you with just another reason to keep playing this addictive little game.
