Yahoo Bounce Out is a puzzle game where players try to bounce as many rubber balls off the screen as they can before time runs out. Each round has a specific number of balls players must clear off the board before the fuse on the dynamite at the bottom of the screen burns down. Bounce Out is available both online and as a download. The download version has more levels and other options, but players have to pay to unlock them. Otherwise, the download version only allows players access to the free trial material. For player who use Yahoo Messenger, Bounce Out appears on the games tab and will show you where your highest score ranks compared to your friends.
How to Play Bounce Out
Bounce Out is easy to learn. Using the mouse, you select two of the rubber balls to swap. If one of the two balls swapped ends up in a vertical or diagonal row of three or more balls of the same color, the balls swap positions and the row of three or more bounces off the board, to be replaced by new balls at the top. If neither of the two selected balls makes a row of three or more, the balls will not swap places. As the dynamite runs out, you’ll hear a beeping sound and the balls will start to jiggle, then explode when the fuse on the dynamite is completely gone.
You get bonus points for bouncing out large numbers of balls at once either by causing a chain reaction or by forming rows of four or more balls. You can also set up V formations so that moving one ball makes it the third in two diagonals, which results in all five balls bouncing out and your score going up.
Black Balls
On higher levels, black balls will appear on the board. These balls are unswappable and serve to only get in your way. They cannot be removed from the board.
The Move Counter
The move counter on the bottom right shows you how many moves you have left, and if it hits zero, the black unswappable balls will Bounce Out on their own so that the game can continue.
The Panic Button
Once per round, you can click on the Panic Button to have the game make one move for you. You only get to use it once per round, though, so be sure it really is an emergency.
Gameplay
Bounce Out has easy to learn gameplay that will have you understanding the game’s concepts pretty easily. Players use the mouse for everything in the game, so there are no keyboard commands to remember. The graphics are solid, with the balls looking somewhat 3-D. The sounds are adequate, as well, but nothing special.
The Bottom Line
If you like puzzle games, you’ll enjoy Bounce Out. While the online version does end after a dozen or so levels, it’s still fun to play through several times. The fact that Yahoo Messenger keeps track of you and your friends’ high scores can be fun, especially if you have competitive friends. Bounce Out may not be the greatest online game ever, but it is addictive and a good way to pass a few hours.
