Cheating? On the Xbox?

Hell yeah!

The Xbox is the first console ever to come with a hard drive. This means it's the first console to let you save games without a memory card. It's also the first to allow developers to patch buggy games, much like PC games. And, of course, it's the first to open the door (unwillingly) to hackers who use the hard drive to store cheats, subvert the Xbox operating system, and store pirated games in their entirety.

The Xbox is also the console to do the best job of promoting and including online play in its offerings. And yes, cheating in online games can be extremely annoying in Xbox Live. It's best to find a reliable group of gamers who play at your skill level.

As mentioned in our Game Cheats article, it's easy to find cheats. You can quickly find uncountable cheats for thousands of Xbox titles at cheat sites like www.gamefaqs.com and www.gamespot.com. There are cheat columns in all major gaming magazines, too.

There's an enormous panorama, a veritable cornucopia, of Xbox cheats out there, from hidden characters to unlockable costumes to mystery weapons to invulnerability to instant access to all areas of the game.

Many Xbox cheats are fairly easy to turn on. Usually you must enter a sequence of button presses - often before starting a game session, after loading the game's interface.

Other cheats require visiting hidden areas to reveal secret items or characters, repeating tasks, winning a challenge repeatedly, or performing certain tasks in a special sequence or repeatedly.

Enabling a cheat can be ridiculously easy or it can require hours and hours of tedious effort. The difficulty really is up to the development team (if the cheat was put in intentionally, as most are) or the bizarreness of the bug that made the cheat possible (for cheats that were created by an oversight during the development process).

We don't support or participate in multiplayer cheating or piracy, so we aren't able to give you information on those topics. We recommend that abusers interested in such things find other ways to amuse themselves. Like TV, knitting, or a good book.

One way to ease your cheating ways is the Xbox GameSaves CD from the GameShark people. The product loads on to your PC and includes a device that connects your PC to your Xbox memory card. The CD contains game saves for dozens of popular games, some of them loaded with unlocked secrets. Once installed, you can copy the game saves to your memory card and then trot the card over to your Xbox to enjoy your exploits.

Cheating... it's good and it's bad. It can make an impossibly difficult game completable, and it can make online gaming a misery of unfair competition.
