Get Ready to Play Wii Mario Kart

Contrary to popular belief, there is actually more than one way to play Wii Mario Kart. There is the newer Mario Kart that makes use of the new Wii Remote motion-sensing controls, but there is also a classic racing game that may bring back some nostalgic memories.

Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel

Mario Kart Wii was released worldwide in April 2008, inviting both old and new generations of gamers into a racing circuit populated by the likes of Diddy Kong, Dry Bones, Luigi, R.O.B., Wario, and more.

Aside from the ability to play online via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, perhaps the most notable feature of this Wii Mario Kart game is the opportunity to use one of four different control schemes. Mario Kart Wii came bundled with the new Wii Wheel accessory. You insert the Wii Remote into this wheel and steer as if you were really driving the kart!

The other three control schemes involve the Classic Controller, the GameCube controller, and the combination of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk attachment. It is largely a matter of personal preference for which control scheme you will use. If your user profile (shown as a driver's license) is used to play with the Wii Wheel often enough, your online name will be highlighted with a Wii Wheel icon during online races. Mario Kart 64 on Virtual Console

Another Mario Kart game that is available on the Nintendo Wii is Mario Kart 64. This Wii Mario Kart game can be picked up through the Wii Virtual Console for 1,000 Wii Points. That is approximately equivalent to $10 in the United States and slightly more in Canada. The game is downloaded directly to the Wii internal memory, rather than being delivered in the form of a game disc.

While there have been other Mario Kart games on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, many have argued that Mario Kart 64 is one of the best in the series. It dramatically improved the graphics over the Super Nintendo Mario Kart game, offering three-dimensional item blocks and other upgrades. The battle mode in Mario Kart 64 is of great appeal as well, so if you want a Wii Mario Kart game, you may want to consider Mario Kart 64 on the Virtual Console as well.

More Karting to Come?

There's no denying that Nintendo has a lot of fantastic franchises that have entertained us over the years. We've got classics like The Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros., but many gamers will always hold the racing genre near and dear to their hearts. As you look for more Wii Mario Kart games, it is very possible that Nintendo could have new versions to come. It is also possible that the SNES Mario Kart could be released on the Virtual Console.

Going even further, the Nintendo Wii is perfectly capable of playing Nintendo GameCube discs as well. For this reason, it is possible to get more Mario Kart action in the form of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Yes, those two exclamation marks are part of the official title. The unique feature of this GameCube racing game is that each kart is occupied by not one, but two characters. The Nintendo character riding in the back is responsible for the various weapons and their deployment. Watch out for that red shell!
