Wii Deca Sports

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

One of the best rated Wii games has to be Wii Sports, so it's with a lot of great anticipation that we get to enjoy Wii Deca Sports, a spiritual successor to the original. Deca Sports is developed by Hudson Soft and not Nintendo, so while there is no support for the Mii characters, you do get on-screen avatars that are styled in much the same way.

Wii Deca Sports

What Games Are in Wii Deca Sports?

In Wii Sports, you were offered five different events: bowling, boxing, tennis, baseball, and golf. In Wii Deca Sports, the selection has been expanded to no fewer than ten different events, hence its name. In many ways, you could say that Deca Sports is some form of an Olympic decathlon. Will you win gold?

Archery

The Wii Remote is meant to mimic the arrow that is being held within your bow. Hold the B button and draw the Remote toward you, just as you would pull and ready the arrow. You'll need to have a steady hand and great accuracy to excel in this Wii Deca Sports event.

Badminton

If you're familiar with the tennis game in Wii Sports, then you'll feel right at home with badminton in Deca Sports. Your character will automatically run towards the birdie and you are responsible for swinging the Wii Remote just like you would a badminton racket. You can even direct your shots based on the direction of your wrist-flicking. Furthermore, if you swing downwards at just the right moment, you can even "smash" the birdie.

Basketball

Perhaps one of the most intense events in this Hudson Soft offering is basketball. Both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk are required, as the latter is used for character movement and the former is used for shooting and passing.

Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball works in much the same way as badminton, except you are working as a team. Think of it as the doubles variant in Wii Sports tennis. Perform an underhand movement to bump or set, and do an overhand swing to spike or block. The character moves automatically to the right spot.

Curling

Some people may say that this sport is a little boring to watch, but it's a blast to place. Hold the B button to grasp the curling stone and then move forward at the right time to throw. This is similar to the bowling game in the original Wii Sports. Wiggle the Wii Remote to sweep.

Figure Skating

Do you have style? Use the analog stick on the Nunchuk to follow the pattern on the ice and then shake the Remote as you approach the designated trick spots for maximum points.

Football (Soccer)

Just like Basketball, both the Nunchuk and the Wii Remote are used for this event. Characters move based on the Nunchuk's analog stick and most actions are performed on the Remote.

Kart Racing

Is that Mario Kart that I see? Not exactly. Wii Deca Sports has its own version of the popular go-kart racing genre and you steer by tilting the Wii Remote to the left and right.

Snowboard Cross

Snowboarding isn't just about performing elaborate tricks. In this event, you point the Wii Remote at the screen and twist the controller left and right to turn. Make it to the bottom ahead of the other racers.

Supercross

The Kart Racing event gets you to zip around track on four wheels. Supercross offers a similar experience, but with two wheels. Hold the controller sideways like a set of handlebars, turning to steer. You can also tilt the controller forward and back, as well as shake it to execute mid-air tricks.

Wii Sports Lives Again!

While it is unfortunate that you cannot utilize customized Mii characters in Wii Deca Sports, the variety of events seems to be great for players of all ages. If you liked Wii Sports and Wii Play, chances are that you will also enjoy this offering.

Comments

This should be just as much fun as Wii Sports. I've been itching for some badminton action!
