Over the last five to seven years, gaming systems have become more advanced and gamers require innovation and unique accessories to make the experience different than what they have been used to. The Xbox 360 and PS3 have a few accessories you can buy, but the Nintendo Wii has some accessories that make certain games much more exciting to play.

Wii Add Ons: Essentials

There are some Wii add ons that you need to get when you first purchase your Wii or soon after.

  • Memory Card. While the internal storage capacity is sufficient to hold items on the Wii, it is not portable. If you want to take your game saves and other information with you, then purchase a memory card. You can use your information on your stored data on your friend's Wii, bringing your characters and special powers.
  • Wii Points. You need Wii Points if you plan on using the Wii Shop. The Wii Shop contains downloadable games from different platforms like the NES and the Sega Genesis. The Wii Points work as your virtual cash.
  • Wii Motion Plus. Released in the middle of 2009, the Wii Motion Plus improves on the motion detection that makes the Wii innovative. This is an additional part you add to the Wii Remote for more accurate motion detection. It works with all the current games. You may find your gameplay better when you add on this peripheral.

Special Game Controllers

Some Wii add ons help you play a game as it was intended.

  • Guitar Hero Controller. Using the Wii Remote to play Guitar Hero just isn't fun. The guitar you can purchase for the game is shaped and held like a real guitar. Five buttons represent your "chords" and you strum a small bar to play the notes. Even if you can't play the game very well, it gives the impression that you are a rocker.
  • Balance Board. At first, the balance board was mainly used for the exercise games on Wii Fit. The board is about two feet by about one foot and contains special technology that detects weight and shifts on the board. For example, when you play the Hula Hoop game in Wii Fit, the board detects your hip movement by the sensors in the board. As you spin, your character spins relative to your movements. The balance board is also used for other games like We Ski. You can also get a larger stepper to place under the board to give it some height, which will give you additional challenges.
  • Fishing Controller. Are you heavy into fishing? Then you can get a controller that resembles a fishing pole. While it's not as large as a real pole, the function is still the same. Crank the reel and pull back on the actual controller and the game Rapala Fishing Frenzy matches your movements.
  • Light Gun. The light gun for the Nintendo Wii adds a different element to shooting games like House of the Dead, Quantum of Solace and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. Using the regular Wii Remote is fine for some, but action is quicker and more fluid in shooting games because the light gun creates realism for aiming and reloading.

Innovation with the Wii

Nintendo created an innovative system when they released the Wii. They also needed special Wii add ons to utilize the motion technology in a more realistic fashion than the standard controller can provide. From guns and exercise equipment to guitars and other instruments, Nintendo will continue to be a popular system whether the Wii sticks around or a subsequent Wii will appear. As long as they keep innovating, gamers will support them.
