Where to Play Text Twist Online
Text Twist is one of the most popular word games on the Internet, and as such, you can find a number of websites that offer it. All of them play exactly the same way: You are presented with a jumbled set of six letters, and you are to form as many words as you can, using only those six characters (and you cannot use the same letter twice). You are awarded a certain number of points depending on the length of the word (minimum 3 letters long), and you get to go on to the next round if you can form a six-letter word (i.e., using all the provided letters) within the time allotted. Here are a small handful of websites on the inter-web where you can find Text Twist. On some sites, you can even purchase a full version of the game that throws in some extra features, options, and gameplay modes (including an un-timed, open-ended version).
Text Twist on Yahoo!
Anyone with a Yahoo! account should be aware of all the different portals that the web giant has to offer. Sure, you've got the standard search engine, news, and email services, but you haven't fully experienced Yahoo! until you've visited Yahoo! Games. There, you will find a variety of games that you can either play alone, or with people from all around the world. While you can't directly challenge a rival in Text Twist (at least in real-time), the Yahoo! version of Text Twist is easily accessible and it will keep track of your own personal high score.
I found the surrounding Yahoo! content to be a little distracting, as the web-based game is on the same page as promotions for other online games, Yahoo! services, and the like. This could be a good thing, though, as it could introduce you to areas on their website that you wouldn't have otherwise known about. Getting to your "My Yahoo!" and "Yahoo! Mail" is only a click away.
There are two versions of the popular word game available on Yahoo! There is the web-based online version and a free download that allows you to play Text Twist while not connected to the Internet.
Text Twist on Shockwave
Shockwave is a great source of colorful games to play online. Unlike the Yahoo! version that runs within your main Internet browser window (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.), when you choose to play the free web-based Text Twist on Shockwave, the site opens up a new window. This helps avoid some of the distracting clutter, but there is a cost involved. Not monetary, though. Instead, there are banner ads in place, and a video commercial plays before the game fully loads. In this way, you don't get instant access to satiate your gaming appetite.
Shockwave has three versions of Text Twist. The free online game is easily the one that most people play, but you can also choose to download the free trial with extra features, or go ahead and buy the full version from the site for $9.95. I'll stick to free online games, thank you very much.
MSN Zone: Text Twist
Most versions of Windows these days come pre-installed with some MSN Zone games, like Internet Checkers, Internet Backgammon, and -- my personal favorite -- Internet Reversi. However, the good people at Microsoft also have a variety of other games available (for free) that you can play at the MSN Zone. Text Twist is there, but even the free online version requires a small download in order to work on your computer. This can be a problem if you are looking to get in a quick game at the local Internet café, or if you are using a computer that does not belong to you. Many public terminals -- say, at the library -- do not allow for downloads. Then again, if you're at the library, you really shouldn't be playing video games anyways.
There is also a "deluxe download" rendition of Text Twist available on the MSN Zone, which is also free.
GameHouse and Super Text Twist
Well, I guess this makes sense. GameHouse created Text Twist, so it's only fitting that it is available on their website. The official name of the game is actually "Super Text Twist", only the "Super" has been dropped from several websites that host the word game. There are a few differences here, though. For starters, there is a "chat" feature on the GameHouse website, allowing you to converse with other Text Twisters.
Sure, you could take advantage of the free online game, or even the complimentary download for playing offline, but if you're in the mood for the full meal deal, it will cost you a hefty $19.95 to buy the full version of Super Text Twist. That price might be reasonable for most games on the market, but considering you can get the gist of Text Twist for free, I'd be hesitant to spend that kind of coin. Alternatively, you can get a 3-game bundle from GameHouse for only ten dollars more, bumping the price up to $29.95 to get your keyboard-tapping hands on Super Text Twist, Super WHATword?, and Super Wild Wild Words. You can play these official games in full-screen mode. There is also a "GameHouse Super CD" for $7.95 that gives you "your game plus our top 50 trials".
