What Does Wii Stand For

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

Since it is easily one of the most unique names for a video game console, it's understandable that you may be asking, "What does Wii stand for?" There has to be some kind of rationale for that brand name, right?

What Does Wii Stand For

Unveiling the Nintendo Revolution

To understand the origins of the Nintendo Wii and to understand what does Wii stand for, it is perhaps appropriate that we engage in a brief history lesson.

As with so many other consumer electronics, the Nintendo Wii was known by a codename during the earlier part of its development. For example, the Nintendo GameCube was known as Project Dolphin while it was still being created. What about the Wii? It started its life as the Nintendo Revolution. It wasn't until April 2006 that it was renamed as the Nintendo Wii.

This announcement came just prior to the E3 2006 trade show. It was at that trade show that Nintendo explained its rationale for the change.

What Does Wii Stand For?

At first glance, you may be wondering, "What does Wii stand for?" As it turns out, Wii doesn't stand for anything at all. It's not an acronym. It's also not a Japanese word that has been transliterated into English.

So, what does Wii mean? According to Nintendo, Wii emphasizes that the console is for everyone, because it's a system for "we" to play. The two i's in the name represent two people playing together (the dot is the head and the stroke is the body). These letters also represent the shape of the Wii Remote.

The official press release states: Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii would like to play, regardless of age, gender, country, language, or gaming ability. It's the console for everyone and that answers the question of "What does Wii stand for?" It stands for our universal enjoyment.
