Violent Games Illegal for Michigan Minors

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

Michigan has become the second state in the U.S. to make the sale of violent games to minors illegal. Governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm signed the bill that outlawed the sale of violent video games to anyone under the age of 18. Those who sell to minors can be punished with fines ranging from $5,000 to $40,000 or up to 93 days in jail. Illinois has already enacted similar legislation.

Video games seem to be a favorite target of politicians at the moment as more states consider legislation to curtail the sale of violent games. Illinois has already mandated limits on video game sales and California's state assembly has passed a similar bill that is awaiting approval or veto by Governor Schwarzenegger.

While politicians point to studies that show violent games have a negative impact on those who play them, there are just as many studies that show there are no such effects on normal people. Much of the "evidence" cited is anecdotal, yet politicians have found this is a popular issue with certain constituents.

In response to the new legislation, the Entertainment Software Association (a group that represents the video game industry) has indicated they will sue to block the law in Michigan as well as the one in California if it is approved. They have already filed suit in Illinois. The Michigan Governor's office stands firm behind their legislation and believes it will stand up to a suit.

Most of the lawmakers who have mobilized against violence in video games admit they have not tried playing the games themselves although some have watched videos of violent gaming sequences.
