From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Finding a good source for video game wallpapers can be daunting. Many websites are laden with advertisements, pop-ups and other bandwidth-gobbling devices. Only if you're patient and persistent can you find a good background image. We've collected a list of some of the most user friendly collections of video game wallpaper around along with a few hints on how to make your own.
Resources
We've taken the work out of searching for video game wallpaper!
Ripped Paper On Your Wall
A great site for video game wallpaper is Ripped Paper on Your Wall. The site isn't laden with advertisements as many websites tend to be. Ripped Paper on Your Wall features official wallpapers from games that hit Nintendo's systems, the GameCube, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance.
The site has unfortunately been dormant for some time now, though there is still a large collection of great wallpapers in the archives. Some wallpapers were available only after completing surveys or finishing mini-games; they're quite a prize on their own.
BoolSite
French website BoolSite.net has a great collection of high-quality video game wallpapers to download. There are easily several hundred images to download from over a hundred different games. Subjects range from Super Mario Sunshine to Street Fighter, Soul Caliber and Final Fantasy. The site is a bit slow due to the large number of images loading at once. Fire up your broadband and have a visual feast.
The Magic Box
Australian-based video game news and information website, The Magic Box also has a healthy selection of desktop-sized images. Their servers are speedy and there are no annoying ads to deal with. Wallpapers are sorted by company and then by game. There are around 300 video game wallpapers to be found on this site.
BestQualityWallpapers
BestQualityWallpapers is a massive wallpaper site that's attractive and not too laden with ads. Many categories can be found, including a large video game wallpaper section. The pages load with all of the thumbnails at once, so 56k-modem users beware!
How To Find More Wallpapers
To find more video game wallpapers, go to any search engine and type the phrase "video game wallpaper" (with quotation marks). You'll get a listing of the most popular sites. Be warned: these usually contain loads of advertisements and only a few video game wallpapers. Use our links above for the best results.
Also try a Google Image Search or Yahoo! Images with the phrase listed above. You'll get pure wallpapers with other related images. It's a hit-and-miss tactic, but can have great results.
Make Your Own!
Can't find a good wallpaper for your desktop? Make your own! With a good paint/photo manipulation program and just a few images you can create sharp looking backgrounds to adorn your desktop. Here's how to do it on your Windows PC.
- For PC games, simply press Alt + PrtSc (print screen) to take a single snapshot of what's on your screen. Then, when you exit the game, open your paint program and hit Ctrl + V to paste the image.
- For console and handheld games, use a digital camera with adequate lighting, then transfer the shots to your PC.
- If you don't want to take your own pictures, find some on the internet! Many good sprite and screenshot websites will have some beautiful shots free for download.
- Once you have the images you want, fire up your paint program. Paintshop Pro and Photoshop are popular choices, but GIMP is a free alternative to the two.
- Create a new image sized to your desktop, then paste and arrange the images on the canvas. Avoid cluttering the page with colors and shapes.
- Add any special effects or text to your liking.
- Save the file as a Windows Bitmap (.bmp) file directly in your Windows directory (usually C:/Windows).
- Right click on your desktop, choose "Properties" and select your file.
That's it! Your desktop will enjoy a more pleasing video game appearance in no time!
