Video Game Patches

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

Even though developers go through a stringent testing process before releasing any given product, several issues inevitably arise, and that is why video game patches exist. Sometimes video game patches are necessary for the game to operate properly, whereas other times, you only need to download and install a video game patch if you want to enjoy extra features and functions.

What are Video Game Patches?

In a nutshell, video game patches are relatively small pieces of code that are appended to an existing video game. Video game patches should always be free to attain, either directly from the original video game developers website or through third-party sources. You'll also notice that there are several unauthorized video game patches created by the gaming community that may or may not be necessary for the game to operate correctly.

Most patches are created to provide a number of bug and crash fixes. Others are designed to balance gameplay, improve compatibility with certain environments (like computers running Windows Vista]], implement various tweaks, or add features and content. In general, video game patches are for computer games, although certain people may have developed patches for titles played on consoles and portable machines as well. Naturally, these are more difficult to install.

Where Do I Get Them?

If there is something distinctly wrong with a particular game, you can usually expect a video game patch to be released from the original studio that created the game in the first place. However, if it is just to fix some minor changes or overcome certain bugs, the online community is a better source. Here are a few websites that offer a wide range of video game patches, mostly for PC games.

  • GameSpot has a huge resource of video game patches, ranging from the very popular Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to other titles like Company of Heroes, City Life: World Edition, and Rome: Total War.
  • File Front also has a constantly updated selection of video game patches that are freely available for download. These solve a number of issues for games of all languages. All of the most popular games are here, including Warcraft 3, Mech Warrior 2, and The Battle for Middle Earth II.
  • GameDownloads.com keeps its video game patches and free demo downloads on the same page, so it may take a little more effort to sift through the content, but boy is there a lot of content! The animated advertisements on the page can be a little distracting, however.
