How do video game fonts, particularly those for the web, work? Well, the video game fonts usually come in one of two forms. Either they are a directly replaceable font that you can use in just about any word processor, like Microsoft Word, or they are a series of bitmap images that must be used with a specialized program. There is free software available that will let you use video game fonts, automatically replacing your keystrokes with the appropriate image file.

Be sure to read the accompanying documentation carefully about rights and privileges. Most video game fonts are freely available to use, but some may require a specific license or they may require a "donation" to the creator.

Fun Use of Fonts

Video game fonts are a great way to get your video game blog a little more personalization. Setting up a website these days is easier than ever, so if you want to get your name out, telling people that your site is the destination for video game music, pictures, and trailers, getting some great video game fonts up on there would certainly be a good idea.

Hosting a video game party? Why not use a special Arkanoid-themed font for the invitation? Opening a video game store? Implement some fancy video game fonts for your flyers and other advertisements! The possibilities are endless for what kind of video game enthusiast you happen to be.

Where to Get Free Video Game Fonts

Just as there is no shortage of websites out there where you can find video game wallpapers, there are several that have some video game fonts for you to download. Some have bigger selections that others, so if you're looking for anything specific, you might have to dig around. Also, as most of these sites are free, they will be littered with advertisements (sometimes animated). A small price to pay to get some exceptional video game fonts.

  • GamingFonts.com: It's right there in their name! This website has all sorts of free video game fonts, spanning just about every generation. I really like the Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Pac-Man fonts. Navigation is a breeze, and while the selection isn't as numerous as some other sites, these are all very high quality video game fonts.
  • Moonstruck!: The fonts found on Moonstruck! are not particularly fancy, but they will certainly bring some nostalgia to your eye as you look at the Mortal Kombat font, as well as those from Mega Man, Sailor Moon, and Chrono Cross.
  • Zone38: One of the coolest features about this site is that there is a video game font preview tool that will let you see what your text would look like with any of the ten or so fonts that the site houses. They've got everything from "the definitive 1980s video game font" to one inspired by the Legend of Zelda.
  • Game Fonts: This is one of the larger collections on the net, all organized alphabetically. Some do not display properly however, so be sure to check out the preview before downloading. The Halo font is particularly attractive.
