Tomb Raider with Lara Croft Games
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Tomb Raider, starring the unforgettable Lara Croft, is widely credited as being one of the first true 3D games.
About Tomb Raider
Every Tomb Raider game presents a 3D world of underground caves, mysterious locations and of course, tombs. Guide the Indiana Jones-like Lara through the mazes, solving puzzles and killing dangerous creatures along the way. The prize awaiting at the end is usually a valuable artifact.
Upon its release in 1996, Tomb Raider was an early entrant into the 3D genre. The camera follows the heroine from just behind and allows a full view of the panoramic world. Though the technology allowed little decoration, programmers for the original game used a number of tricks to give the environment a more realistic, expansive feel.
Lara has a host of moves to traverse these dangerous places. Backflips, rope climbing, grabbing ledges and darting across the floor to fire her dual pistols are just a few examples. With each successive game, Lara gains a more impressive repertoire. The game draws inspiration from 2D platformers such as Out of This World, Prince of Persia and Flashback.

Nude Raider
Allegedly the Nude Raider patch was created from within Eidos and released on the official website in 1996. The patch, which made Lara Croft appear naked, was available for only a few hours but was downloaded and distributed by a number of fans. Eidos apparently threatened lawsuits against any server hosting the patch or any other unauthorized home-made patches for Tomb Raider.
Tomb Raider Media
In 2001, the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was released with Angelina Jolie in the lead. Despite the stir at an American actress playing a decidedly British role, the movie won enough sales to warrant a sequel.
Two years later, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life appeared but was largely ignored. A third movie was in the works but was scrapped shortly after Cradle of Life tanked.
Tomb Raider has also had brief incarnations in comic book and novel format.
