About The Suffering Video Game

In The Suffering, you are an inmate named Torque, and you have been sent to the Carnate Abbot Penitentiary island for killing off your family. Torque has blackouts and cannot seem to remember that he performed this gruesome act. As he ponders his fate in his jail cell, the spirits of executed prisoners and vicious monsters attack the prison. Now freed from your cell, you will attempt to survive and escape the prison with your life intact.

Survival will not be easy. You will encounter different types of creatures who will get in your way. As you make your way through the prison, you will find out more about these monsters and their connection with Torque. Through flashbacks, dialog with occasional characters, and clues, the situation and your fate will become more clear.

Gameplay

The Suffering video game has a lot of shooter elements, but it plays more like an action/adventure game with a lot of combat situations. You will use a variety of weapons, including a shiv, grenades, and many types of guns. To obtain these items, you must look in various rooms, and collect them from people who were killed. Ammunition and items to boost your health are also found everywhere in rooms, located in lockers, on tables, etc.

On occasion, you will encounter others who need assistance, give you informatio,n or are willing to help you out. However, be cautious since they might not always be what they seem, and may try to kill you.

In combat situations, using weapons is easy. The R1 button is used to attack with any weapon (except grenades, which are thrown with the R2 button), similar to the scheme used in Resistance: Fall of Man. Scroll through your weapon choices with the directional buttons, and press the X button to select the one you want.

Keep in mind that your actions throughout the game will determine its ending. There are three possible scenarios, so depending on your style of play, you will see a different result.

Graphics and Sound Effects

The visual effects in The Suffering are best experienced when you play the game at night. The dark shadows and creepy corridors keep you on your toes. Character motion is pretty fluid, but specific detail like facial expressions and certain objects appear to be a bit flat. The best graphics of the game are during Torque’s mental flashbacks and the creatures you encounter that have weird ways of moving about and reacting in combat situations.

Make sure you have the sound effects setting to maximum when playing this game. Sounds consist of dialog, creature sounds, strange voices, and the activation of switches and devices. The music soundtrack is like the kind you would hear in an excellent horror movie, but does not overwhelm the action of the game and adds a bit of uneasiness to your exploration of the penitentiary.

Is This Video Game Worth It?

If you can get beyond the somewhat outdated graphics, The Suffering is an interesting game with an intriguing storyline. This fact keeps the gameplay a bit addictive as you encounter and discover the secrets of the Carnate Abbot Penitentiary and how Torque is tied into its insanity.
