The Command
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
The Command & Conquer Saga is a compilation featuring 13 Command & Conquer games, dating back to the original release in 1995. For those who started playing this strategy game series only recently, it offers a great opportunity to go back to the roots of the game and see how the story and game play have evolved. Game collectors may want to look at this release as well.
What is the Command & Conquer?
Command & Conquer, or C&C for short, is a real-time strategy game. It is so addicting and popular that we have selected it as a top video game that never gets old.
In C&C, you start off with basic units and you must build a base. To continue fueling your base and your army, you must collect resources. Finally, once you are ready to attack, you seek out the enemy base and try to destroy it – before your base is destroyed.
In the single player missions, you are often presented with scenarios that keep the game fresh. For example, you might have to provide safe travel for a caravan or help a spy escape.
Multiplayer is all about deathmatches involving two or more players. Quick and aggressive play is necessary as you must balance building your base with having an army capable of attacking. In later versions of the game, you have access to air and sea units, in addition to the standard ground units. This allows for a variety of strategies.
The Command & Conquer Saga Considerations
There are a few things to keep in mind before purchasing The Command & Conquer Saga. First, if you have played the previous versions, you may quickly tire when trying them again. Second, the older PC computer games are quite dated graphically and may be somewhat unpleasant to look at. In fact, the system requirements are so old; you could potentially have trouble running the game, especially if you have Windows Vista.
Finally, the best part of C&C was the online multiplayer action. You shouldn’t expect Westwood to still be running the servers for the older games. You can, however, play deathmatches against the computer opponents.
What Games are Included?
The compilation is a mixture of games and expansion packs for the original games.
Command & Conquer
The game that started it all was released in 1995. It is also known as Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn. Play as either the Global Defense Initiative (the good guys) or as the Brotherhood of Nod. The DOS version of the game required a 486 DX2 66MHz computer with 8MB of RAM. The Windows 95 version needed a much beefier Pentium 60.
Command & Conquer: The Covert Operations
An expansion pack for the original game, it adds 15 single player missions, along with ten multiplayer maps.
Red Alert
Red Alert was released in 1996. It features the same game play as the original C&C, but with a completely different storyline. This game involves an alternate universe where American and European forces battle against the Soviet Union.
Red Alert: Counterstrike
One of two expansion packs released in 1997. This pack focuses mainly on multiplayer, adding maps and a few new units. There are also some new single player missions as well for this entry in the Command & Conquer series.
Red Alert: The Aftermath
Aftermath is the second expansion pack for Red Alert', also released in 1997. It adds new units as well, and includes over a hundred new multiplayer maps.
Sole Survivor
This is a spin-off of the original C&C. You control a single unit from your army and move them around on the map. Think of it as a first person shooter but with an overhead view.
Tiberian Sun
This game is a sequel to the original C&C. It takes place about 30 years after the end of the first game, as the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod go to war again.
Tiberian Sun: Firestorm
This is an expansion pack for Tiberian Sun. It adds single player storylines for both the GDI and the Brotherhood of Nod.
Red Alert 2
This game is a sequel to the original Red Alert and was released in 2000. It features two completely separate storylines for you to play. The Allied story line involves an attack by the Soviet Union on American soil.
Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge
This is an expansion pack for Red Alert 2. It features the character Yuri, who uses psychic powers.
Renegade
Renegade picks up the story near the end of the original C&C. This game is actually a first and third person shooting game instead of a real-time strategy game. You play as Nick Parker, a GDI commando.
Generals
Command and Conquer: Generals, released in 2003, added a third storyline to the C&C world. This time, the two super powers are USA and China, and they are countered by the Global Liberation Army, which is basically a Middle East terrorist group. You are able to play as any of the three factions.
Generals: Zero Hour
This is an expansion pack for Generals. The main focus is on your ability to play as one of the nine generals featured in the game. There are also some new single player missions as well.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
C&C 3, released in 2007, is a sequel to Tiberian Sun. The game returns the series to its roots, as this is basically a modern version of the original C&C games.
