Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Games
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael are more than names of famous artists. They're the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ninja-fighting turtles who battle evil in the sewers of New York. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon show was popular in the late 80's and in early 2003 when an updated version appeared. Video games based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been largely produced by Konami and are based on the cartoon shows.
Early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Games
The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and was released in 1989, titled simply Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was a side-scrolling fighting game with an overhead sewer map that allowed players to switch between the ninja heroes and their unique abilities. Each turtle has a different weapon with different abilities, such as Donatello's long reach with his bo staff but slow attack speed, while Raphael and his sai weapons had a short reach but could attack rapid-fire.
Another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was released in 1989: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game. This was a side-scrolling beat-em-up that featured the turtles fighting Shredder through various levels in New York and beyond. Gameplay was simple with a simple 4-way joystick and two buttons (attack and jump). Players could again switch between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gang to take advantage of their unique weapons. Multiplayer with up to four people simultaneously was possible on the arcade machines.
In 1991 a third Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was released: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project. The game followed closely in the line of the previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games but included more unique abilities for each of the turtles.
The ninja turtles made the leap to the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4, a port of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time with added levels and other minor alterations.
Other TMNT Games
Our pizza-eating friends have been featured in many other titles for the Game Boy, NES, Super Nintendo and more. Of note are the Game Boy games that feature the turtles in side-scrolling battles much like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game.
A fighting game in the vein of Street Fighter was released titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters on multiple platforms. A party game with the green heroes has also been released.
TMNT Games of Today
The current generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games are based on the later incarnation of the television show. Konami has steadily produced most of these licensed games and continues to do so today.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus were released in 2003 on many systems but received poor reviews. A third game in the series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare is scheduled for release in late 2005 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox , Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo DS. Konami reports the third game will focus on Multiplayer cooperation, strategy and cool combo moves. The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game is featured as an unlockable as well, reinforcing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as timeless heroes to many generations of gamers.
