Super Mario Sunshine Review

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

If the title has Mario in it, you simply can't go wrong. Though Super Mario Sunshine is considered by some as the weakest Mario title, there's a surprising amount of variety and fun in this GameCube title.

Super Mario Sunshine Basics

Here's the scoop on Super Mario Sunshine: While going on vacation to the aptly named Isle Delfino, Mario, Princess Peach and Toadsworth run into a strange situation. Graffiti has been painted all over the tropical island and a strange metallic goo is spitting out enemies that plague the land. Who's the culprit? It looks like Mario himself!

The mayor of Isle Delfino charges Mario to clean up the mess. He presents him with FLUDD, a mechanical backpack of sorts that stores and sprays water using a variety of nozzle attachments. Mario immediately sets to work cleaning the ugly mess from the beaucolic island.

Soon after he begins his mission, the strange Mario impostor appears and kidnaps the Princess! As if his troubles weren't bad enough, Mario learns that he has to locate and free Shine Sprites from the goo-covered baddies to restore order to Isle Delfino and rescue the Princess once again.

Playing Super Mario Sunshine

There are ten levels in Super Mario Sunshine, each on a different part of Isle Delfino. Though they aren't as graphically varied from each other as in Super Mario 64, the levels are surprisingly well-designed. Scale enormous mountains or climb perilous catwalks above docked ships. There's even a few roller coaster battles that simply cannot be missed.

In each level there are 7 Shine Sprites to be found. When you enter the stage you'll see a small clue as to where you'll find them. The piles of sludge are usually a good indication as to where they'll be! Also be on the lookout for blue coins. Collect 20 to exchange them for more Shines!

Using FLUDD, Mario's talking water pack, you'll be able to perform a number of interesting stunts. You can hover over short distances, spray water in any direction and even do a quick spin to spray 360 degrees. Uncover two new nozzles to gain a dash or rocket ability to explore new areas.

As you collect Shines, new areas will open for Mario to explore. Isle Delfino will slowly come back to life as you clean the town of goo. But what is this mysterious smoke coming out of the volcano? Could that be where this Mario impostor is hiding?

The Secrets

Super Mario Sunshine is loaded with secrets. Spraying portraits or graffiti with water often yields coins. Sometimes spraying the sand can uncover a few secrets as well. Use water in any way possible, including extinguishing torches and filling empty buckets. You might be surprised at what pops out!

In addition to the small secrets, Super Mario Sunshine has a load of secret areas to play as well. Warp zones, areas with a capella Mario music, often strip you of your water pack and force you to deal with some crazy 3D situations.

Mario's My Sunshine

Super Mario Sunshine is everything a Mario game should be. Easy controls, fun and interactive environment, tons of hidden areas and secrets, and good replay value. It might not be as ground-breaking as its predecessor, but Super Mario Sunshine is a top choice for must-have GameCube games.
