Street Fighter Characters 2

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

For an introduction to the “original” eight characters of the Street Fighter series, have a look at the first Street Fighter Characters article.

Balrog

Street Fighter II Bosses

These four boss characters were not selectable in the original Street Fighter II but were made available in later versions like Championship Edition. Moreover, although the same four names were used, they were assigned to different characters when the game was ported from Japan to the United States. For the purposes of this resource, we will refer to the characters by their American names.

Balrog

Known as Mike Bison in Japan, his name was changed to Balrog to avoid issues arising from striking resemblance to Mike Tyson. Balrog was an American boxer and is usually seen wearing red gloves, blue shorts, and a blue tanktop that he tears open upon victory. Reportedly a resident of Las Vegas, he was banned from professional boxing for injuring his opponents, later joining the evil Shadoloo organization. Eventually, it is said that he ran the criminal syndicate into the ground, and became a bum.

As a boxer, Balrog’s marquee moves reflex this background:

  • Turn Punch – briefly turning his back, then charging forward with a powerful straight punch
  • Dash Straight – a charging straight punch
  • Dash Upper – a charging uppercut

Vega

Vega

Hailing from Barcelona, Spain, Vega (known as Balrog in Japan) is one of the all-time fastest Street Fighter characters. A master of Spanish Ninjitsu, Savate, and Zapota, Vega uses his claw to slash at his opponents when he is not busy climbing up or bouncing off (invisible) walls. Sadistic, graceful, and vain, Vega wears a mask to protect his beautiful face during a battle. It takes exactly 14 blocked hits for Vega to lose his claw in battle, effectively cutting his attack range in half.

Vega is known for three special moves:

  • Rolling Crystal Flash – a rolling attack capped with a claw strike
  • Barcelona Attack (Claw Dive) – bouncing off the wall, Vega dives at his opponent from above for a claw attack
  • Barcelona Attack (Izuna Drop) – bouncing off the wall, Vega performs a mid-air German suplex-like manuever

Sagat

Sagat

At a full seven feet in height, Sagat is one of, if not the tallest Street Fighter character. A Muay Thai God from Thailand, Sagat hosted the first world warrior tournament. His characteristic right eye patch came as a result of a battle with Dan’s father, Go, and the scar on his chest came from Ryu’s Metsu Shouryuken. His honour shattered, Sagat joined M. Bison’s Shadoloo organization to aid in his effort to seek revenge. He eventually left the criminal syndicate, lost his “God of Muay Thai” title to Adon, and overcame his burning rage and hatred.

Sagat has three signature moves:

  • Tiger Shot – a projectile that can be shot high or low
  • Tiger Uppercut – a jumping, flipping uppercut
  • Tiger Knee – a jumping, rising knee thrust

M. Bison

M. Bison

Known as Vega in Japan, the “M” in his American “M. Bison” name officially stands for Master. He is usually dressed in a red military uniform, large silver shoulder plates, and a grey cape. His fighting style is known simply as “Psycho Power”, deriving his power from the world’s negative energy through the two “Psycho Drives” found in Thailand and Brazil. As the head of the international Shadoloo criminal organization, M. Bison hosted the second world warrior tournament, wherein he is killed by Akuma’s (Gouki in Japan) Shun Goku Satsu (Instant Hell Murder, or The Raging Demon). It is said that the insane dictator is still in hell today.

Three marquee moves were originally assigned to M. Bison:

  • Psycho Crusher – launching himself forward surrounded in Psycho Power
  • Double Knee Press – lunging forward in a double kick/knee attack
  • Head Stomp – a stun move wherein he jumps onto the opponent’s head

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers

In Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, we are introduced to a Bruce Lee clone, a Native North American, a female soldier, and a Jamaican kickboxer.

Fei Long

Fei Long

A native of Hong Kong, Fei Long is a tribute to Bruce Lee, complete with the loud battle cries and vocalizations to accompany his kung fu maneuvers. In fact, Fei Long is a action movie star just like his real life counterpart. His particular martial arts style is referred to as “Hitenryu” or “Flying Heaven”. Fei Long has little significance in the overall Street Fighter storyline, but remains one of the most popular characters. His name translates as “Flying Dragon”, whereas Bruce Lee’s nickname was “Little Dragon”.

Fei Long is best known for three moves:

  • Hurricane Kick – a flying forward-jumping kick
  • Shienkyaku – a flaming, spinning, rising kick
  • Rekkaken – a series of kung-fu punches

Thunder Hawk

T. Hawk

Usually known as simply T. Hawk, he calls Mexico home. Typically dressed in blue jeans, a blue vest, brown moccasins, and a headband adorned with two feathers, T. Hawk can be considered on par with Zangief in strength, but generally has more finesse and utilizes fewer grappling techniques. T. Hawk and his fellow Thunderfoot members were driven off their land by Shadoloo, and have continued to seek their revenge against M. Bison, as well as freedom from his tyranny.

T. Hawk has three signature moves:

  • Mexican Typhoon – a grappling move wherein he spins the opponent with one arm
  • Tomahawk Buster – a rising shoulder tackle
  • Condor Dive – a diving strike from above

Cammy White

Cammy

Cammy’s story is perhaps one of the least known but most interesting in the Street Fighter universe. She was originally created by Shadoloo to be a soulless doll for assassination purposes. Her first assigned target was Dhalsim, but unfortunately for M. Bison and crew, the Yoga expert made Cammy self aware. She later learns that she was meant to be the next “shell” for M. Bison’s essence. Vega helps her escape, and Cammy, suffering from amnesia, is deposited at the British Delta Red paramilitary organization. Her appearance consists of braided blonde hair, a red beret, and a revealing green leotard.

Cammy was given four marquee moves:

  • Spiral Arrow – spinning like a bullet, she lunges feet first
  • Cannon Spike – a jumping, rising kick
  • Spinning Knuckle – steps forward with a back-fist attack
  • Hooligan Combo – jumps up, condenses into a ball, and emerges with a low kick maneuver

Dee Jay

Dee Jay

Sporting dreadlocks, fingerless gloves, and loose-fitting orange pants, Dee Jay is a Jamaican kickboxing expert with a dancing twist. Despite being born on Halloween (1965), he is a cheerful dancer who loves to sing and feel the groove. His nickname is “The Southern Comet”, and he is the only character in the series designed by Capcom USA. He has a parrot named Baramacho.

Dee Jay has four signature moves:

  • Maximum Jackknife – a jumping, rising set of kicks
  • Hyper Fist – a rapid combination of uppercuts
  • Double Dread Kick – a pair of spinning roundhouse kicks
  • Max Out – a small projectile
