Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3) Review

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

Sonic the Hedgehog fans, the new PS3 version of this game may not be all that we expect from this new generation console. Will you want to play it? Read on gamer and find out!!

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3 – What’s it All About?

Once again, Sonic must save the world from the evil Dr. Eggman, who has kidnapped the queen of the magical water city called Soleanna. To do so, he must travel through the world of the humans in order to stop the doctor’s malicious plans from succeeding.

Consistent with previous Sonic titles, the game is an action/ adventure games based with characters traveling at fast speeds, capturing rings, going through obstacles and defeating the multiple enemies that will try and stop you from completing your quest.

Gameplay- Fun or Frustrating?

The most important thing to notice about this game in solo play or co-op is the poor control you have over your character. While racing through what should be exciting colorful environments and intense graphics, you are fighting with the controller to look in the direction you would like to go. This can be extremely frustrating when you are moving at super fast speeds. You can adjust the view, but the camera seems to move too slowly to keep up.

During the game you will also experience a lot of video action where all you can do is watch while your character zips through some areas that would be interesting to explore if you had the opportunity. Timing is also important since you have to watch and make sure you are ready to move when the video animation sequence has finally completed.

Another drawback to this game is that you have to waste time in areas, like the town, where you have to do some meaningless tasks in order to move forward in the game.

Character Moves and Attacks

All characters available in Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3 have similar basic moves that are easy to initiate with single button pushes. However, each one has different abilities. Sonic is reputable for his speed, Shadow has a homing attack and can drive large vehicles, and Silver has telekinesis ability that allows him to lift and move objects. Consistent with previous Sonic titles, there is very little to learn in order to play this game. It will probably take about 5 minutes to get all the moves you need to know, without breaking a sweat.

Game Modes

Co-op

  • In co-op mode, play with up to 4 friends as you try and complete different scenarios in a team effort. However, the action is split screen and can be difficult to view and follow due to the constant video movie sequence interruptions throughout each level. This is a bit disappointing since it takes away some the fun of the game.

Racing Mode

  • Compete in a timed race against a friend in four different scenarios. This is a fun mode if you are looking for a quick game where you can enjoy playing around with the different Sonic characters.

Story Mode

  • This is your single player mode where Sonic must save the queen of Soleanna from the malicious plans of Dr. Eggman and his henchmen.

Sonic the Hedgehog- Worth the money?

Despite some frustrations with the game, you can still get some enjoyment out of it by grabbing rings in some unusual places, battling enemies and trying out the different Sonic characters' interesting abilities. Graphically, it is visually appealing, but that is as far as it goes. It is a game LoveToKnow would recommend renting first before shelling out the 60 bucks (plus tax) to purchase.
