Serious Sam II Review
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
If you thought the first Serious Sam was serious in it’s gameplay and beautiful graphics, then you just might be sorely disappointed with the sequel, Serious Sam 2 for the Xbox.
The Story And Gameplay
The universe has called upon Serious Sam Stone to take down Mental and his minions. Since this game is a first person shooter and follows the formula for every other FPS, then you already know you’ll go to different worlds riding the place of enemies, picking up weapons and power-ups, and also shooting short quips that range from hilarious to bland.
There’s a plus and a minus to the above formula. While the sequel doles out enemies in extreme numbers, there’s nothing really pleasing about shooting enemy after enemy after enemy in powerful action then being let down by the end of the level’s cutscene. It makes you want to say “Blah! Blah! Blah!”
The Graphics
Serious Sam 2 continues the huge worlds and gorgeous landscape design that the first one employed. Unfortunately, when you’re dealing the pain to everyone and there’s lots of everyones to deal to, there is noticeable slowdown. The drop in speed is the worst I’ve seen on the Xbox in a long time and it’s disappointing when you’re running and gunning.
The speed also dropped when playing the co-op mode, so at least the frame rate problems were consistent throughout the modes.
The Controls
Gunplay is also disappointing. Some of the gun designs are relatively cool, but when you finally get a chance to shoot them, there’s no ‘kick’ to them. The targeting system is a lock-on target that really isn’t helpful to anything. You don’t have time to pay attention to what you’re locking on to because of the waves of bad guys that keep coming at you.
Controlling vehicles and operating the turrets weren’t too bad, but the fact they were included in the game seemed forced.
Thompson’s Two Cents
Serious Sam 2 seems like your below average copycat first person shooter. The humor is dull; the action is plentiful, but unattached; and the slowdown hinders gameplay most of the way through the game. Cult fans of the first one will enjoy the game, but may not enjoy the short time it takes to play. Serious Sam just wasn’t so serious this time out.
