Rockstar North
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Best known for the monumentally successful Grand Theft Auto series, Rockstar North is part of the larger Rockstar Games group. Based in Scotland, Rockstar North was founded by Dave Jones and named DMA. The initials were meaningless in the beginning but eventually were said to mean "Direct Mind Access" and finally "Doesn't Mean Anything".
The first game that put DMA in gamer's radars was Lemmings in the early 1990's. The simple puzzle game had users assigning various tasks to the mindless lemmings. The game was released on over twenty different systems and sold over 20 million copies. DMA's next few projects were follow-ups and remakes of the Lemmings franchise.
In 1994 DMA created its first console title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System called Uniracers. The game was essentially a side scrolling racing game with personified unicycles as racers. A heavy emphasis was placed on performing flips, twirls and other stunts that would reward players with a speed boost and points. Nintendo published the title and subsequently asked DMA to create games for the upcoming Nintendo 64. Body Harvest was the result, but delays and difficulties in production caused Nintendo to finally abandon the game. Another publisher picked up the title years later.
Grand Theft Auto
Using many ideas from Body Harvest, DMA created a top-down game for the PC and PlayStation called Grand Theft Auto. Players controlled a thug who would steal cars and commit other crimes to gain popularity in the gang underworld. Controversy arose due to the amounts of violence featured in the game. Despite the negative attention, Grand Theft Auto was a hit.
In the late 1990's, DMA struck a deal with Rockstar Games to publish Grand Theft Auto 2. The sequel featured new missions and other elements but retained the same retro look and feel of the original. However, 2001 brought Grand Theft Auto III to the PlayStation 2 and featured 3D graphics and a realistic world to explore. The game, needless to say, was enormously popular. The same year, Rockstar Games bought DMA, renamed it to Rockstar North and produced PC and Xbox versions of the hit game along with more sequels.
