Ripping Blu ray with PS3
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Now that you've had your share of Resistance and Little Big Planet, you may be interested in ripping Blu-ray with PS3. The idea of ripping discs quickly gained in popularity with the first two PlayStation video game consoles, so the Sony PlayStation 3 really is no exception to this trend.
PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray Discs
In going through a video game console comparison, one of the major differences that you'll find with the PS3 is its ability to play Blu-ray discs. These optical discs may look very similar to CDs and DVDs, but they are capable of holding a lot more data. As a result, they have become the format of choice for high-definition movies after beating out HD DVD in the so-called format wars.
Blu-ray discs are used not only for high-definition movies from several Hollywood studios, but the disc format is also used for most games for the PS3 as well. This allows developers to provide impressive 1080p graphics, large level maps, and plenty of extras that may not have been possible with the smaller format of the DVD disc.
Ripping Blu-ray with PS3
The PlayStation 3 is also equipped with a rather large internal hard drive, so many people have grown interested in ripping Blu-ray with PS3 so that they don't have to deal with the physical media if they wish to watch movies and play games on the system.
This process is not for the feint of heart. Before you proceed any further, realize that any modification to your console can void your warranty. Further still, the manipulation of copyrighted material may lead to legal ramifications. Proceed at your own risk.
Can I Burn Blu-ray Movies?
The simplest solution would be to buy a Blu-ray burner on your computer and use the appropriate software to make a backup copy of your favorite Blu-ray movie. However, a big part of the price of the PS3 went into the Blu-ray player, so you could make use of that existing technology instead.
It should be noted that the PlayStation 3 only contains a Blu-ray player and not a Blu-ray burner. In this way, the game system cannot be used to copy discs. While it is not possible to "burn" the discs in the traditional sense, a method has been found for ripping Blu-ray with PS3.
The idea is to install a special build of Linux on the PlayStation 3 and then going through a specialized process to successfully dump PS3 Blu-ray movie discs. More specific instructions can be found at PS3News.com. The movie will then be "mounted" as an ISO on the PS3's hard drive. Talladega Nights took up 20.9GB of space.
For an alternative explanation, read the guide provided at Toolbox for IT. This still involves Linux and the use of an ISO image.
Can I Copy PS3 Games?
Now that you know ripping Blu-ray with PS3 is possible for movies, you may be wondering if the same is possible with the games. This can run into a lot of legal issues due to the high potential for piracy. In this way, the process for burning PS3 games can be similar to burning PS2 games, although you'll need recordable Blu-ray discs instead.
There are resources online where you can find free downloadable PlayStation ROMS, but many of these sites can run into a legal gray area.
It may be possible to copy PS3 games, but this largely inadvisable. At the same time, the Xbox 360 now provides the ability to copy games onto the embedded hard drive for ease of use, so Sony may be developing a similar official solution for the PS3.
