Revolution-like Controller for PlayStation 2
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Here's another rumor brewing up around the interweb: a new peripheral for the PS2 to compete against the Nintendo Revolution.
Revolution-like Controller for PlayStation 2
With word that the PlayStation 3 may not be able to keep its targeted Spring 2006 release, the people over at Sony might be ramping up its current console, the PlayStation 2, as a direct competitor against Nintendo's upcoming Revolution console. Apparently, the company is planning to release a controller with motion-sensitive technology -- not unlike the gyroscopic variety found in the Nintendo Revolution -- to work in tandem with the PS2's Eyetoy peripheral.
Take That Nintendo!
The Eyetoy has been met with limited success, to say the least, but hordes of gamers are literally jumping up and down in anticipation of the innovative gameplay that just might be had on Nintendo's next-generation home gaming system. By implementing motion-sensitive technology into PlayStation 2 games, Sony might be hoping to take the wind out from under the Revolution, and have a controller that might outdo what Nintendo can offer.
The PlayStation 2 already has a huge fan base -- over 100 million units have been sold to date -- compared to the Nintendo Revolution which has to be sold first, before games can be purchased. In this way, Sony's possible jump into motion-sensitive controllers might be attractive to game developers.
Will it Work?
Then again, the Eyetoy was quite innovative, and it hasn't exactly been a hot commodity. The games that supported the peripheral have been sub-par at best, whereas the expected titles for the Revolution are very highly anticipated. Everyone's waiting for the next Smash Bros., and for the opportunity to swing Link's sword.
I'd Love To Know
Of course, this is little more than words on a webpage at this point, so we'll just have to wait and see if anything develops.
UPDATE FROM E3
It seems this is no longer a rumor and is completely reality... with a curveball. This tilt-sensing controller is destined for the next-generation PlayStation 3 rather than the PS2.
