From LoveToKnow VideoGames
If you're looking for that elusive "killer app" for the Sony PlayStation 3, then you've definitely come to the right place, because this Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3) review will describe exactly why this first-person shooter is an absolute must-have for any PS3 owner.
Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3) Review
The comparisons are inevitable. Regardless of which next-generation console you select, be it the Xbox 360, Sony PS3, or even the supposedly family-friendly Nintendo Wii, there is no shortage of fairly violent first- and third-person shooting games. With the Wii, you have games like Red Steel and Call of Duty. Over on the Xbox, you have Halo 2 and the highly anticipated Halo 3 for the Xbox 360. The biggest competitor, however, is the very positively received Gears of War, a title that won numerous game of the year awards.
So, needless to say, Resistance: Fall of Man was in for some very heavy competition right out of the gate. Thankfully, although it is not without its shortcomings, Resistance is absolutely a top-notch offering and easily the best launch title available for the PlayStation 3. It wins in the most important category of all: fun.
The Back Story
In a nutshell, the world presented in Resistance: Fall of Man is that of 1950s Europe. The difference between this and games like Medal of Honor, however, is that World War II never happened. Instead, an alien species known as the Chimera have invaded our planet, easily taking over nation after nation, sweeping eastward from their initial landing point in Russia. They've completed dominated continental Europe, and so the final stand for mankind -- or at least Europe -- is in Great Britain. And this is where you step in.
Taking on the role of American Sergeant Nathan Hale, you lead a troop of soldiers who must do battle against the increasingly aggressive (and intelligent) Chimera. There are over 20 "chapters" in all to explore, fighting wave after endless wave of alien monstrosities, but by and large, the action is fairly linear. But that's okay, because you'll be having too much fun to notice that you aren't presented with all that many choices in this game.
These Graphics Are Gorgeous, But...
Don't get me wrong. The visuals in Resistance are quite brilliant and the 30fps frame rate never skips a beat, even when there are countless soldiers and alien beings on the screen at the same time. But, given that Sony is marketing the PlayStation 3 as a processing powerhouse, you would think that the graphics would have more of "wow" factor to them. Anyone with a high-end gaming computer has probably experienced graphics that are on par with what is presented in this offering.
Am I disappointed? A little. The lighting effects and texture maps aren't nearly as impressive as they could have been, but given that this is one of the first games to be sold for the PS3, I can forgive these relatively minor (and ultimately forgettable) shortcomings. I can't wait for the sequel, which will undoubtedly sport even better graphics, more intense detail, and lots of blood splatter.
Fantastic Controls and Gameplay
I'm not as familiar with the dual analog setup as I can be, so getting used to the controls took a little longer than it would for someone who is already well-versed with this control scheme. After I grew accustomed however, I can see just how intuitive it really is. You walk and strafe using the left analog stick, whereas you turn and aim with the right analog stick. Pushing in the right analog stick puts you into "zoom mode" with most guns, helping better shoot down the Chimera. Switching weapons, throwing bombs, and utilizing alternate shooting options are an absolute joy.
The gameplay, likewise, is easy to pick up, but difficult to master. It's not quite a "twitch" style game wherein you can just run into the middle of the field with guns a-blazing, but it's nowhere near as technical as something like Rainbow Six or Splinter Cell. It is best to find a good hiding spot, popping out for a few shots at a time. Other gamers may have different strategies, but this is what worked best for me. Unless you want to use the double-barreled shotgun.
The Ultimate Online Video Game Experience
Enjoy online death matches, team plays, and capture the flag events? Then you'll find yourself in fragging heaven with Resistance. You can hop online with 30 other people and enjoy the full 30fps frame rate throughout. No graphical glitches, no lag. Just a whole lot of fun.
Final Word: Buy This Game
Every person who has a PlayStation 3, especially those of you are fans of the FPS genre, should most definitely pick up Resistance. It is easily the best game available for Sony's next-gen gaming machine.
