Quantum Redshift for Xbox Review
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Quantum Redshift is a beautiful futuristic racer that showed off the graphics processing power early in the Xbox’s life. The game combines speed, trash-talking, and outrageously detailed tracks that I didn’t know were possible at that time.
A Quantum Story
Usually, the stories in these kinds of games are lackluster, generated only for the excuse to make a game. Quantum Redshift follows suit. In the future, speeds unheard of are dominating the planet, but few people can handle the velocity of the machines. And now, all of those people are in one spot for a world championship get-together.
Playing Quantum Redshift
In Quantum Redshift you race around various richly-detailed tracks grabbing power-ups, shooting your opponents and trying to get first place. But you knew that already. There are a number of characters you can race and will race against and there is also a Nemesis to each racer.
The racing takes place in a variety of modes which should be familiar to any racing fan. Time Attack is pure speed to beat the top track time. Quick Race is a non-tournament circuit race for no prizes or money. Multiplayer is for you and up to three of your friends to race.
Tournament mode is where you progress through the Novice, Amateur, Expert, and Master levels so you can unlock the super hard Redshift tournament. Sometimes, you’ll get to race in a Nemesis Challenge where it’s a one-on-one race for the glory. Oh, and it unlocks a lot of pride and the nemesis.
The Graphics
Quantum Redshift is stunning. Lush tracks, detailed ships, and gorgeous speed. This game is fast. No slowdown, even when everybody is firing their missiles. The game stood out at the time of it’s release, but was an underdog since everybody wanted their Halo and Dead or Alive games.
Controls
Not bad, but then again, I don’t know how one of the spaceships is suppose to control. Turning was tight (and you can even drift) and controlling your weapons and shields was easy enough with the default configuration. If you were going fast in one direction and you need to switch sides, you felt the heaviness and swayed back and forth as you turned you machine around. Also, there were ample opportunities to ramp and land in water and I will tell you this, I felt the hit as I landed in the water.
Thompson’s Two Cents
Quantum Redshift is a must have game for any Xbox or racing game fan. For sheer graphics alone you’ll love this game. And if you ever get a chance, read the manual. It’s funny and trash-talks you—which made me feel less like a man... and it’s just a manual.
