Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones Review
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is the third edition to the exciting combat/action-adventure series Prince of Persia. It begins where the Prince of Persia: Warrior Within ended. The Prince has changed his fate, stopping the Sands of Time from being created, and saving himself from certain death. Our hero travels home to Babylon with Kaileena, the Empress of Time. Upon reaching his destination, Kaileena is killed and her body is dragged away by a mysterious enemy. Cast out alone, he discovers that the once grand city of Babylon is in fiery ruins. The Prince must find the men who took Kalieena’s body and discover who was responsible for the destruction of his homeland.
Is Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones Fun?
This game will keep you on your toes. A lot depends on your acrobatic and puzzle-solving skills. You will climb through areas that seem impossible, and I guarantee that you will have to retry many sections at least a couple of times. If you have played any of the other Prince of Persia games, many of the moves are the same. Running up walls, rolling through narrow passages and timing jumps are skills you need to know well. Fortunately, the Prince will get access to “Recall” the famous reversing time option that allows you to move back a few seconds to allow you to correct a mistake. Like the previous games, you do need to collect sand in order to use it.
The Prince does encounter a few enemies along the way. You have several combos available, including a sneak fast attack that is very useful. Archers are very fast and can dodge quickly, so time your combos carefully. Melee fighters are another story. Alone, they aren’t that bad, but don’t let them surround you. Once you are knocked down, if you don’t push the “A” button to get up, you will continually get struck and killed.
Babylon is full of obstacles. Always check your surroundings by using your black and white view buttons frequently for clues. The game will let you know when you should use an overhead view by showing a small white eye at the bottom of the screen. In many areas, it will briefly show you the route you will need to take to get through difficult areas.
Traps, traps and more traps. Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is full of them. Timing is everything. Some you will simply have to jump over, others you will have to run along walls or bounce back and forth between different areas. This can be quite frustrating, but they are fun to figure out.
The Prince will eventually change into a “Dark Prince” due to the spreading of the Sands of Time. This “dark” version of him has his own unique abilities, but is very corrupt and ruthless.
Modes of Play
- An options menu where you can adjust your controller, camera and sound options
- An Extra Features section where unlocked items found in the game can be viewed.
- A Combo List that shows you every move you will ever need (useful if you don’t have the manual).
Audio/Video
As you are traveling through the game, you will occasionally hear useful narrative dialog that gives you information on the details of the story. When you pause or save the game, the voice of Kaileena speaks to you in a very polite, soothing tone. The music soundtrack is a lot more subdued than the Warrior Within. Gone are the hard rock riffs and replaced with more atmospheric, fantasy style melodies.
The graphics in Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones are very cool, consistent with the detail of the other two releases. The Prince and all other characters have smooth and complex motions. The environment really captures the devastation of the city’s destruction. Some areas of the game can get a little too dark though, making it hard to distinguish ledges, platforms or puzzle triggers.
Summary
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is a game filled with acrobatics, impossible jumps and dangerous traps. It is the third in the popular series, which continues where the Warrior Within left off. Run across walls, roll under narrow passages and fight melee and archer warriors. Reverse time with “Recall” and correct a careless mistake. Discover who destroyed the city of Babylon and find the Empress of Time who was killed upon your arrival there. Join this new Prince of Persia adventure, filled with complex puzzle solving and numerous environmental obstacles.
