Play RPG Games
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
You take on the role of a character in a fantasy world when you play RPG games. Some games, like World of Warcraft and RuneScape can get you immersed into their world with non-linear gameplay and highly addictive quests. More straight-forward games, like 'Final Fantasy have an ultimate goal, and will get you involved deeply with the characters. Whichever type of role-playing game you play they all have similar elements that you can recognize to help you play the game.
The Basics
The first thing you do when you play RPG games is to build your character. This is the guy or girl that will be at the mercy of your keystrokes and commands, so make him or her someone you are willing to grow with. One technique is to build the character around your attributes. Have you always wanted to be a magic-user or a warrior? Distribute points accordingly. Are you intelligent or agile? Give yourself a higher rating in these categories then. Remember that your character continues to grow throughout the game.
After your character is just the way you want, you are thrust into the world to begin your adventure. What do you do? Sometimes you are given a basic task to start out with and then little bits of clues will form, giving you a major task (like in Elder Scrolls).
So what happens when there is no task given or if you aren’t ready for the task? Meet people! RPGs are like the MySpace of video games, especially online games. They are social networking sites designed to bring people together (albeit virtual people) to form groups and communicate. You meet people on Myspace, so you should begin meeting people in your RPG game.
In the course of meeting people, you may find they have journeys they want you to take, objects they want you to find, or monsters they wish you to banish. You can either take these on singly or in concurrence with your main task.
These are the basics of any RPG game: building your characters, meeting people, gathering tasks and goals.
The World
Fantasy worlds are expansive. They can consist of many lands and involve many people with many things to do. One important thing to do is to take notes. Sure, most RPG games have an internal note system that records your movements and completed tasks, but usually those systems only keep track of the basics. They don’t scribe exact locations on maps or what a character said. That is up to you. A reason that it is important to remember characters is that with technology, game designers have the ability to change the attitude of the character later on in the game if you come across them again. Depending on how you treated them earlier, the second meeting could be favorable or negative, especially if an actual person is controlling the character. Writing down your treatment the first time will help alleviate any doubts on how you should treat the character with any future meetings.
Play RPG Games in Many Different Ways
For linear games with a definite set of goals, you can actually continue playing after you are done with the game. Depending on what type of gamer you are, you may not have done everything in the game. Don’t worry, those tasks are still there. You can go back and grab those objects someone wanted or defeated a bad guy someone wanted defeated. Final Fantasy is a great game that you can finish and continue playing this way. Game designers usually require you to complete those tasks in order to unlock the goodies hidden in the game.
There are games that are never-ending. When you play RPG games like this, which tend to be online games, you continue to build your character, meet people, and find tasks to do. World of Warcraft is the best example because of the amount of people worldwide that play it. You have an infinite number of jobs to undertake and the designers keep on adding more. Instead of one large goal, you have many mini-goals that you can do which may or may not need the help of other people.
In the End
How you play is up to you. The above techniques and tips should get the basics across. With more imaginative game designers looking to bring more uniqueness to RPG games, more players will come on board to see what the big deal is and get hooked. They will never look back.
