PS3 to Play PS1 and PS2 Games

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

The News

There is never a shortage of news about the PlayStation 3 and today is no different. Word on the street is that Sony's next-generation home video game system might have a virtual console-like functionality, and will be able to play select titles from the original PS1 and the current PS2.

PlayStation 3 to Play PS1 and PS2 Games?

Copycat?

PlayStation 3 to Play PS1 and PS2 Games?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Sony is trying to take another page out of Nintendo's gameplan. We recently heard about a Revolution-like Controller for PlayStation 2, designed to be motion sensitive just like Nintendo's next-gen console, and now by adding the ability to tap into their own old library -- a huge library -- of games, Sony seems to be doing something on the PS3 that sounds an awful lot like the virtual console Nintendo has planned for the Revolution, re-opening the doors to classics from the NES, SNES and N64.

But How?

Sony seems to be gearing up for the games to be streamed over a broadband network. While gamers are playing an earlier part of the game, later parts of the game are getting downloaded to avoid lengthly load times.

Will It Happen?

Keep in mind that we've already heard of Sony digitally distributing PSone games onto the PS2 via the network adapter, and that hasn't come to fruition yet. This could be a more logical step, considering that the PS2 is near the end of its run anyways. Then again, who knows when the PlayStation 3 will actually hit the market. Some said March, others say June, still more say November. We've even heard word that Sony's next system won't be available until next year!

More as it unravels.
