About Overlord

What kind of video game is Overlord?

  • Overlord is officially billed as an action-adventure game, but it certainly has elements related to role-playing games and real-time strategy games. The core gameplay involves issuing real-time commands to "minions", a collection of gremlin-like creatures controlled by the self-titled protagonist of the game. The game is played in a third-party perspective.

Who is the developer and publisher?

  • This title was developed by Triumph Studios, the same company that developed the Age of Wonders series of turn-based strategy games. They are based out of the Netherlands. The publisher is Codemasters and they have previously published offerings like Colin McRae: Dirt for the PS3, Hospital Tycoon for the PC, and Rafa Nadal Tennis for the Nintendo DS.

'Where can I play this game?

  • At this time, two versions of Overlord exist. One can be played on the Microsoft Xbox 360, whereas the other has been designed for the PC.

Characters and Story

What is the basic story?

  • At its core, you take control over the Overlord as he controls his army of minions. Their goal in the fantasy medieval-styled world is to conquer the neighboring lands, currently ruled by seven corrupt ruling heroes. You battle your way through the region, eventually confronting each of these seven warriors.

What are the different minion races?

  • The brown minions are known to be melee fighters, rushing straight into battle. The blue minions have healing abilities, allowing them to revive their fallen compatriots. The red minions are capable of launching fireballs at enemies. The green minions can clear poisonous gas and their primary attack is a backstab.

Who are the other main characters?

  • Although the Overlord is the official main character, he never speaks. The main speaking character is an aged minion named Gnarl. He acts as an informant and an advisor. The other main characters are the seven ruling heroes, all of whom have been corrupted by one of the seven deadly sins. They are: Melvin Underbelly (gluttony), Oberon Greenhaze (sloth), Sir William the Black (lust), Goldo Golderson (greed), Jewel the Thieving Hero (envy), Kahn the Warrior (wrath), and Wizard (pride). They are various races including elves, dwarves, and halflings. In this way, Overlord is similar in scope to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Reviews and Recommendations

Is Overlord a good game?
