Online Video Game Rental Canflix

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

Americans may have quite a few online video game rental outlets to consider, but Canadians are not offered the same kind of selection. In fact, there are very few of these services available to those wearing a maple leaf, so unless you want to physically visit a video rental shop, Canflix might be your only option for video game rental. Is it worth it?

Online Video Game Rental - Canflix

Canflix - A Dual Rental Service

Unlike most other online rental sites, Canflix's plans do not segregate DVD movies from video games. When you sign up for an account with Canflix -- there is a free two-week trial to be had, by the way -- you gain access to all their movies, as well as all their video games. This is a fresh change for those of us who love our movies just as much as we love our video games.

Video Game Systems Offered

Nintendo GameCube

If you're looking to rent games for your legacy systems, you won't be satisfied with Canflix, because there is no love for your Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo here. The same is true with any of the portable systems, like the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP. You will only find games for the:

Game Selection

I was quite disappointed with the library of video games offered by Canflix. You'll have a hard time finding the latest releases here: for example, there are only 37 GameCube games offered. You will not find any of the Mario Party titles here, nor is Super Mario Strikers available. You'll find similar situations on the PS2, anx Xbox, though the situation isn't quite as severe. Xbox 360 owners will probably not be pleased with the selection of only 20 titles, though you do get to choose from hits like Dead or Alive 4 and Gun. In this way, you can almost consider the video game rental section as a "bonus" to your DVD-renting membership.

Pricing Plans

As previously mentioned, a Canflix membership will give you access to the company's entire DVD movie collection, as well as video games for the GameCube, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. The prices are quite competitive, costing no more than a DVD-only online rental service like Zip.ca. You can have as many rentals as you like each month, and keep them as long as you wish without penalty.

Online Video Game Rental - Canflix

Like all other online rental services, Canflix only restricts how many discs you can have out at any time. Turnaround time between you returning a disc, and receiving a new game in the mail is usually less than a week, though, of course, this depends on your location relative to Canflix's distribution centre.

Canflix's pricing plans are as follows:

  • 3 Disc Plan - $19.95
  • 4 Disc Plan - $24.95
  • 5 Disc Plan - $29.95
  • 6 Disc Plan - $34.95

Queue System

One huge saving grace for Canflix is the power to arrange your selections in hierarchal order. This gives you much more control than, say, only being able to designate a small handful of titles as "ASAP." With Canflix, you can rank order every game and movie in your "Flixlist".

A Final Word

For me, it was fun having the Canflix service for free during the trial period, but I did not find it worth my while to stay on beyond that. Living in a major city, I have ready access to big box rental outlets like Roger's Video and Blockbuster, and with the latter's "no late fee" policy and a huge selection of games, Canflix just didn't cut the mustard for me. That said, if your primary motivation is for DVD movie rental, with the occasional video game, Canflix might not be too bad of an option.
