Online Monopoly: Here and Now
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Online Monopoly: Here and Now is an updated, modern version of the classic family game. This video game title boasts modern real-estate locations with updated prices, new playing pieces, and interesting changes to the Chance and Community Chests cards. Read on and see what all the fuss is about!
What’s New in Online Monopoly: Here and Now
The Monopoly franchise has seen close to 100 interesting variations of its game, including Dogs, Nintendo, SpongeBob Squarepants, Sports, Spider-man, and Star Wars. All these versions had different themes, but had one thing in common: price. In this new version, gone are the dated prices of yesterday; they've been updated to the 21st century with the high inflationary prices of today. What cost you a few hundred before now costs you millions of dollars.
Other new changes:
- In regards to the utility companies, instead of owning the Electric and Water, you now can purchase Internet services and cell phone companies.
- Instead of railroads, you now own airports like JFK and LAX.
- Fenway Park and Times Square replace the classic Park Place and Boardwalk.
- You will no longer win $10 dollars for second place in a beauty contest. Instead, you will win big money on reality TV shows.
- New game pieces include: French fries, Cell Phone, Laptop, Coffee Mug, Plane and a Hybrid Car
- If you are sent to jail, a police car comes to get you and drag you away.
Aside from all the changes to the game, Hasbro has kept the integrity of the series by keeping the gameplay the same. If you have ever played any variation of this game, you will have no trouble playing Here and Now.
Playing the Game
This Monopoly game is fun to play. The screen is very interactive and appears 3-D. When it’s your turn, the dice rolls on the board and your piece moves for you. As you pass each piece of property, you can see the “card” for it in a small screen that shows its value and pricing detail. When you land on each piece of real estate you land on that is unowned, you have the option to buy or try to win it by auction. If you choose the auction, your opponent can bid against you for the property. If you back out during the bidding you will lose the property to your rival.
A cool feature of the game is that it keeps track of every move and transaction made during the game. If somehow you forgot what your opponent has done, you can see it in the log and refresh your memory. It also keeps track of the time you’ve played the game (so you can see how much of an addict you are!).
Consistent with the original game, your main goal is to own as much property as possible and cause your opponent to go broke. However, you may not always get the real estate you want simply by landing on it. A nice feature of the game gives you the opportunity to offer a trade for a property you want. You do this by selecting the property you want and make a price offer. Your opponent has the option to take or pass on your offer, so this may not always work. But it may be worth a shot if your opponent has little money left.
As you go through the game, you may end up losing a lot of money due to rent due, taxes and other fees. If this happens, you have the option to sell and mortgage your existing properties to get you out of the red. However, if you cannot get out of debt after this, you have to declare bankruptcy and lose the game.
