Nintendo DS Redesign DS Lite

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

The redesign is here! After many rumors and speculations, Nintendo of Japan has finally unveiled the redesign of the popular dual screened handheld. The Nintendo DS will receive a makeover much like the Game Boy Advance did with the Game Boy Micro. A thinner, sleeker and better version of the Nintendo DS is now set for release in Japan on March 2. Other territories will have to wait, but in the meantime you can drool over the screenshots and info below.

The Nintendo DS Lite - Lighter, Slimmer, Brighter

The redesigned Nintendo DS is the same shape and features almost the same button layout at the current model. The difference lays in your pocket. That is, the Nintendo DS Lite is less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and over 20 percent lighter.

The measurements for the Nintendo DS Lite are compared to the current DS model's measurements (in parentheses):

Weight: 218g (currently 275g)

Dimensions: 133mm x 73.9mm x 21.5mm (currently 149 mm x 85 mm x 29mm)

The redesigned DS also has brighter screens and a crisper resolution, much like the difference between the Game Boy Advance SP and the Game Boy Micro.

Redesigned Nintendo DS - Cosmetic Changes

Other changes to the original Nintendo DS design have been both cosmetic and functional. The d-pad and face buttons have been moved toward the top of the unit to facilitate ease of use. No more thumb cramps when you play Mario Kart DS.

To make room for this migration, the power button and Start/Select buttons have also been moved. The Start/Select buttons are visible to the right of the screen, but where's the power button? Rumors insist that it's been moved to the side of the unit and is now a flip-switch. The same sources say the stylus hilt has been shifted to the side as well.

No details have been released about pricing or release dates outside of Japan. It's only a matter of time, however, before the dieter's version of the Nintendo DS hits shelves everywhere.

Comments

Matt: In terms of physical size, the cartridges are the same size as the regular Nintendo DS games; they use exactly the same games. So, they're roughly the size of a larger postage stamp. In terms of memory, DS games range from 8MB to 128MB on average, though there are some games that may be larger.
