New Super Mario Bros Cheat Codes

To accompany the launch of the slimmer, smaller and brighter DS Lite, Shigeru Miyamoto and crew over at Nintendo let us go retro while looking to the future at the same time with New Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo DS. The game is designed to be 2.5D, meaning that the action is primarily side-scrolling a la the original Mario Bros series on the NES, but the graphics have a three-dimensional feel to them. Ready to jump back into the action as everyone's favorite red overall-wearing plumber? Then keep reading for a few hints and tips along the way, as well as a handful of bonuses to reward you for your hard work... and I'm not just talking about those lucrative gold coins.

• Play single player as Luigi: Sure, you can already play as Mario's brother in those multiplayer mini-games, but if you want to throw on the green and take on the single player adventure, you can do that too. To play as Luigi, simply hold the L and R buttons as you select your saved file from the "Select a File" screen.

• Fireworks and Original Mario Bros Theme: If you complete a level with the timer set so that the last two digits are the same (11, 22, 33, etc.), you will get to enjoy the original Mario Bros level completion song and a series of fireworks.

• Skip World 3: In a hurry to finish the game? You can unlock a path from World 2 straight to World 4 by defeating the World 2 boss using Mini Mario. You'll have to use ground pound attacks to defeat the mummy.

• Skip World 6: Just like the above cheat to get you to jump ahead to World 4, you can do the same thing when you get to World 5 in order to skip ahead to World 7. Just defeat the World 5 boss as Mini Mario.

• Unlimited Toad House Items: This won't help you finish the game any faster, but it does reward you for your hard work. If you clear every level, including the lettered bonus levels, you will receive unlimited Toad House items.

• Special BG Pattens: Just finish the game to enjoy a little more customization.

• Save Anywhere, Anytime: Ever get to a level where you wish you could save halfway? Now you can. Just beat the final castle in World 8, and when you restart the game, you'll be able save anywhere, anytime using the "Save" option fromn the map screen menu.

• Different Mushroom Houses: Depending on what time you get on a stage, the mushroom houses at the start of each world will differ.
  • A red house (for items) appears if you get x11, x22, or x33 on the timer.
  • A green house (for a 1up mini-game) appears if you get x44, x55, or x66.
  • An orange house (for a Mega Mushroom in your inventory) appears if you get x77, x88 or x99.

• Flagpoles for 1Ups: Just like in the original Mario Bros, you get a certain number of points depending on where you jump onto the flagpole at the end of a stage. However, if you manage to launch yourself and land on the top of the flagpole, you can actually get a free life!

• Warp Cannons: Skipping ahead couldn't be easier. When you go through secret exits, you find yourself by a large cannon with a world number written below it. Check out this list of known warp zone cannons and blast off to new heights:
  • World 5: Secret exit from World 1 Tower
  • World 5: Secret exit from Stage 2-A.
  • World 6: Secret exit from World 3 Ghost House.
  • World 7: Secret exit from World 4 Ghost House.
  • World 8: Secret exit from World 5 Ghost House.
