Mortal Kombat Characters 2

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

In an effort to counter the controversy surrounding the original Mortal Kombat, the sequel to the series introduced two new finishing maneuvers to accompany the gory fatalities: friendship and babality. The cast also saw a number of new additions, including a new Shokan warrior and three hidden characters.

Kung Lao

For kombatants introduced in the first Mortal Kombat, check out Mortal Kombat Characters.

New Selectable Characters

Whereas the first Mortal Kombat had seven selectable characters, MK2 (1994) gave gamers a choice of twelve combatants. Some of these were updated versions of old friends, like Scorpion and Liu Kang. Shang Tsung, in a younger-looking form, became selectable in this second offering, as well as six new faces.

Kung Lao

Just to make things as confusing as possible, Midway decided that this Kung Lao is a descendent of “Great Kung Lao”, bearing a striking resemblance to the legendary figure. The current Kung Lao, Liu Kang’s sparring partner, is a Shaolin monk from the “Temple of Light” and a student of Bo’ Rai Cho. Donning a razor-trimmed hat, Kung Lao is a quiet but righteous man.

Signature moves:

  • Cyclone Spin – twirls quickly, causing damage to any opponent who touches him
  • Teleport – jumps straight up and emerges from the bottom of the screen
  • Hat Toss – throws his hat with the super-sharp brim
  • Fatality 1 – Hat Slice – cuts opponent in half vertically
  • Fatality 2 – Hat Decapitation – throws hat and cuts off opponent’s head

Reptile

Reptile

A servant to Shang Tsung, Reptile appears in MK2 wearing a green version of the Lin Kuei ninja outfit. Underneath is a hideous scaly figure, and one of the final few surviving Saurions. His lifelong quest is to free his “people” from the tyrannical clutches of the Outworld (his home world is Zaterra, annexed by Shao Kahn), and his absolute dedication to this goal leads to fits of insanity at times. In later versions of the game, he abandons the humanoid form, and is distinctly reptilian in appearance.

Signature moves:

  • Invisibility – in a flash, he disappears from the screen
  • Acid Spit – shoots a projectile of putrid acid
  • Force Ball – a slow-moving explosive ball of energy
  • Slide – a low sliding kick identical to Sub-Zero’s
  • Fatality 1 – Tongue Lash – removes mask to reveal reptilian head, shoots out frog-like tongue and eats opponent’s head
  • Fatality 2 – Invisible Slice – while invisible, cuts opponent in half at the waist

Kitana

Kitana

Stepdaughter to Shao Kahn, Princess Kitana may appear to be in her twenties, but in actuality she is over 10,000 years old. Her tight-fitting blue female ninja outfit is complemented by her powerful and razor-sharp steel fan. Born in Edenia but raised in the Outworld, she turned to the side of good when she discovered that Shao Kahn killed her father, Jerrod, when he conquered Edenia. She later aligned herself with Sindel (her mother), Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and other Earthrealm warriors.

Signature moves:

  • Fan Lift – creates a force of energy levitating the opponent off the ground
  • Fan Toss – throws the razor-sharp fan either on the ground or in mid-air
  • Square Wave Punch – a flying 90-degree punch
  • Fatality 1 – Kiss of Death – kisses opponent who then inflates and explodes
  • Fatality 2 – Fan Decapitation – slices off opponent’s head with fan

Jax

Jax

Sonya Blade’s direct superior, Major Jackson Briggs (known simply as “Jax” to most) is a Special Forces officer and the first African American combatant to appear in the series. The muscular Jax is known for his impressive physique and bionic arms. He was originally named Kurtis Stryker; that name was later recycled for a different character.

Signature moves:

  • Ground Pound – punches the ground causing a minor earthquake
  • Gotcha Grab – grabs his opponent with one hand and lands several punches with the other
  • Wave Punch – shoots a wave of energy
  • Fatality 1 – Head Clap – explodes opponent’s head with two-fisted clap
  • Fatality 2 – Arm Rip – tears opponent’s arms out at the sockets

Mileena

Mileena

Mileena is a hideously deformed clone of Kitana. By order of Shao Kahn, she was created via Shang Tsung’s sorcery in an effort to keep Kitana in check, or, according to some reports, to replace her. It appears that Mileena is some form of hybrid, however, given her Tarkatan (Baraka’s species) appearance and vicious nature. It is rumoured that she is the lover and companion of Baraka.

Signature moves:

  • Teleport Kick – slips through the ground and re-appears from above with a jump kick
  • Sai Throw – charges her sais with purple energy and throws them at her opponent
  • Ground Roll – rolls along the ground, tripping opponent
  • Fatality 1 – Surgery – slices and dices opponent with sais
  • Fatality 2 – Man Eater – consumes opponent and spits out the bones

Baraka

Baraka

A member of the Tarkatan species (an Outworld-Netherrealm hybrid), Baraka has long blades imbedded in both of his arms. These “arm-blades” are retractable in much the same fashion as Wolverine’s claws. The Tarkatan “people” seem to inhabit the vast deserts of the Outworld and harbor no direct ill will toward the Earthrealm combatants. Baraka led the army that attacked the Temple of Light, instigating Liu Kang’s quest for vengeance.

Signature moves:

  • Blade Spark – shoots a sharp blue projectile of energy
  • Shredder – cuts up opponent repeatedly with arm-blades
  • Blade Swipe – a crossing swipe of the arm-blade
  • Fatality 1 – Decapitation – slices off opponents head with arm-blade
  • Fatality 2 – Impalement – stabs both arm-blades into opponent’s midsection and lifts them off the ground

New Bosses

Two new (unselectable) boss characters were introduced in Mortal Kombat II: Goro’s successor and a taunting warrior-king.

Kintaro

Kintaro

Goro’s successor, Kintaro is another Shokan warrior with four arms and a horrible temper (but he has no direct relation to Goro). He has distinctly more feline characteristics with tiger stripes along his back. Second in command only to Shao Kahn, Kintaro appears to be a more powerful version of Goro with the added ability to shoot fireballs over great distances. He was a difficult opponent because he could grab combatants in mid-move and slam them to ground. His teleport stomp was also very difficult, if not impossible, to avoid.

Shao Kahn

Shao Kahn

Shang Tsung’s leader and emperor over the Outworld, Shao Kahn (not Khan) has the appearance of ancient Mongolian or Japanese warlord, highlighted by his “death-mask” crown. He is perhaps best known for his taunting of opponents—before, during, and after matches. He would laugh, or say such things as “You will die, mortal!” and “Was that your best?” Shao Kahn also has the ability to consume souls and is overwhelmingly powerful, overcoming many enemies with brute strength.

Hidden Characters

Jade and Smoke

If you happened to fulfill certain criteria as you progressed through the game, you would be challenged by one of the three secret hidden characters--Smoke, Jade or Noob Saibot--all of whom became playable selections in later versions of the game.

Smoke

Here, Smoke wears a grey Lin Kuei ninja outfit, and is constantly surrounded by puffs of smoke. In later Mortal Kombat games, he takes on a robotic appearance like Cyrax.

Jade

Jade is a childhood friend of Kitana’s, wearing an identical outfit but in green. She is a general in the Edenian army.

Noob Saibot

Noob Saibot’s name comes from the reversed spellings of Mortal Kombat’s creators—Ed Boon and John Tobias. It is said that he is the undead Sub-Zero from the original Mortal Kombat.
