I remember back in the mid-90s, when I was just a wee lad, I would go over to the neighbor’s house and play the old Lemonade Tycoon on their archaic computer. From what I remember, I would play a little bit, not sell any lemonade, and then leave in a fuss. Thinking back, I don’t think the neighbors liked me that much.

Back To Business

If you’ve played any incarnation of Lemonade Tycoon, then you already know the basic premise: Make money by selling lemonade. You control how much you sell each cup for, how much goes into advertising, you buy your own supplies, concoct your own recipe, etc. For such a simple game, you have a surprising amount of control over your business.

Lemonade Stands 101

You create your recipe. You decide how many lemons and how many cups of sugar go into each pitcher, as well as how many ice cubes go into each cup. For hotter days, you’ll more ice, so you’ll need to adjust all of your ingredients accordingly. It can get frustrating trying to nail down a recipe that customers enjoy, as it’s pretty much just trial and error. Hey, that’s business baby! Once you make your recipe, it will tell you how much it costs to make each cup. Using this information, you have to decide how much you’re going to charge for each cup. The hotter it is, the more people will be willing to pay. You have to keep your stand stocked with ingredients. If you run out in the middle of the day, you’re going to lose a lot of business. You’ll have to buy ice everyday, because it melts. You’ll also have to re-stock your lemons and your sugar fairly often. You’ll also have the ability to invest in advertising. You choose how much you pay each day, up to twenty dollars. You can choose several different locations to sell lemonade at, for a certain amount a day. The more popular places cost more to sell at, but your home neighborhood is always free. There’s a little news headline everyday that sometimes tells of special events that are taking place around town, so you’ll want to check that everyday so you can be sure to go where the people are.

That’s just the very basics of business. Things get considerably deeper, what with upgrades to your equipment, stand, and hiring extra help. While it’s hard (or impossible) to actually lose at Lemonade Tycoon, it can be pretty difficult to get your lemonade empire off the ground. The game itself is easy to jump into, but it’ll take a little while to really learn the ins and outs of lemonade selling.

Visuals and Audio

Do the graphics and audio really matter? The game uses a very simple interface from which you control your business, with a little screen that shows customers coming and going from your stand, just for looks. The graphics are simple, but it isn’t about the graphics. The little diddy that plays in the background is catchy enough to not get annoying. The sound effects, however, can get on your nerves. The “ding” when you make a sale, the “bloop” sound that lets you know whether or not your lemonade was enjoyed, as well as countless other sounds get very repetitive and irritating. Thankfully, there is an option the turn the audio off.

Wrap-Up

I’m not sure what aspect of Lemonade Tycoon reaches out and kidnaps my attention, but it’s not letting go. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this immersed with such a simple game. This is a game you can really invest time into and have it not feel like time wasted. Trying to get your business to the top is quite an endeavor, and an enjoyable one at that.
