Katamari Damacy is one of the most original, fun games to come along in years.
Do Your Best!
In Katamari Damacy, you are the Prince, son of the King of all Cosmos. It seems that your father got a little rowdy one night, and all he remembers is waking up with a headache and all of the stars in the sky being gone. He leaves it to you, his loyal son, to fix this problem. Your mission is to recreate the stars, one by one, using whatever you can find on Earth. You do this by rolling anything and everything you can into a giant ball (Katamari), which your father then launches into space, thus creating a bright new addition to the less than starry sky.
The King of all Cosmos is utterly hilarious in the way he dumps all of his responsibility on his son and it’s more than obvious that he doesn’t care about anybody but himself. Nevertheless, you can’t help but love his eccentric tendencies and his loud behavior.
Controlling The Prince
You control the Prince using the two analog sticks. If you push both sticks forward, the Prince will roll the ball forward. Push the sticks backwards, the Prince moves the ball backwards. In order to turn you would move one stick forwards and one stick backwards. It may seem complicated at first, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time, and it will become second nature. There are also little tricks you can learn, such as a speed boost and a quick turn around maneuver that will aid you in your journey. You’ll also have to keep in mind that what you roll over and collect will affect how the ball rolls. At first, you’ll only be collecting small things so this won’t come into play much; but as you start to roll over bigger things (I.e. cats) your ball will become lopsided and you’ll have to adjust your steering accordingly. This comes into play double-time when you roll over things like pencils and your ball is full of protruding objects.
The World Of Katamari Damacy
The levels in Katamari Damacy are pretty straightforward. Most levels require you to build a katamari of a certain size within a certain time limit. Some levels, in which you replace key constellations, require you to build a katamari out of specific things. For example, in order to build the cancer constellation, you’re required to construct a katamari made completely out of crabs. There’s something completely hilarious but also slightly disturbing about seeing dozens upon dozens of crab legs shaking about in the air.
The scale at which the game progresses is an amazing thing to behold. You’ll start out small enough to roll around on a desktop with a massive human face in front of you, but before you know it, that human (the one with the face) is lost inside your katamari.
Visuals and Audio
Katamari Damacy is done in a very block-like cartoon style, which works well for the game, but doesn’t exactly show off what the Playstation 2 is made of. However, this is the kind of game where graphics rightfully take a back seat to gameplay. The sound effects are great and the soundtrack is excellent, full of quirky Japanese pop songs that perfectly fit the action.
I Feel The Cosmos
Katamari Damacy isn’t the deepest game around. In fact, it’s brilliantly simple. The wacky story and constellation levels keep the game interesting enough to follow through to the end. Plus, you’ll want to see just how big you can get your katamari.
