Jewel Quest Cheats and Strategies
Jewel Quest takes the basic concept behind Bejeweled and puts a different spin on it. Instead of focusing on making sure you don't run out of moves or getting you to fight against the clock, per se, the goal in Jewel Quest -- which can be found on a number of websites, like Shockwave, MSN Zone, and Yahoo! Games -- is to turn every tile gold. You see, gold is much more valuable than ugly grey stone. This article is designed to provide you with cheats, strategies, tips and tricks to help you master Jewel Quest, making you the best Indiana Jones-like treasure hunter you can be.
Basic Strategy and Tactics
Like Bejeweled, you need to match up either vertical columns or horizontal rows of identical icons in Jewel Quest, except they are called "relics." You'll find things like gold coins, green emeralds, red rubies, and even some creepy looking skulls. The mechanism of play is nearly identical to Bejeweled: you can swap adjacent relics either to the left, right, up or down. When you create a set of three of more identical relics, they disappear from the board and new gems fall from the top of the screen, pushing all the relics affected downwards.
When you create a set, the tile behind the relic turns gold. You need to make the entire field gold in order to move onto to the next level, and you are under the clock. There is a time limit to each stage, so you really shouldn't be dilly-dallying in your treasure-hunting pursuits.
The basic strategy in Jewel Quest calls to focus on all the tiles that are still grey. Creating additional trios on tiles that are already gold will get you extra points, but will not advance you to the next level. Remember that when you create a set, the relics above trickle to the bottom. In this way, if you already have 2 rubies in a row ready to go, you may want to avoid "using" rubies above them. In this way, when you create other sets, those rubies above can fall downward, and help set you up for a trio of red gems, effectively turning the tiles beneath a gleaming gold.
Focus on the Bottom
Your goal in Jewel Quest is to create an entire field of gold tiles. You can take advantage of the gravity pull created by disappearing sets of relics. By creating trio near the bottom of the screen, you can make many (oftentimes unexpected) chain reactions. This can either be a Godsend or a curse, depending on the situation.
You see, if you focus solely on the bottom two rows (at least initially), by the time you turn them gold, much of the upper rows will already be gold. This can cut your workload down substantially, making you a more efficient treasure hunter. I usually work from the bottom up, looking at a single row (or two) at a time until I get near the top of the screen. This is especially true with the later stages where the field is not a perfect square. Don't spend too much time with the tiles in the center of the field as they are usually taken care of as a side effect of other combinations.
That said, these Jewel Quest chain reactions can cause some frustration, especially if you're working on a particular tile only to have an unexpected disappearance take away that all important gleaming skull, for example.
Buried Treasure is Important
This is a non-issue for the first couple of stages, but later on in Jewel Quest, you'll come across what is known as "buried treasure". These shaded-in relics must be matched twice in order for them to disappear and turn the tile gold. They are almost always right near the bottom of the screen. You will be spending most of your time trying to first, unearth the (initially unmovable) relic and then second, clear it and turn the tile gold. This is easily one of the most challenging parts of Jewel Quest and it is where you should be spending the majority of your time. By the time you clear the buried treasure, most of our other work will already be done.
