General Advice
The first piece of advice you'll get from any veteran In The Groove dancer is to practice. Start with the easy songs and progress to the harder ones as you perfect certain sequences. Learn to stay away from the center because as you get to the hard difficulties, you'll have no time to go to the center. Most people migrate back to the center to keep the beat or because they find it's easier to find the arrows.
If you're having trouble hitting the back arrow (most beginners do), make sure you are turning your body (hips, torso) towards the leg you want to hit the arrow with. This is common sense body physics and if you've played any sports that keep you mobile (basketball, volleyball) you tend to move your hips, torso, and pivot on your feet.
This may sound crazy, but play the songs you like to get use to the game. You may like dance songs better than slower hip-hop songs or even super fast songs because you play better when you constantly moving. Maybe you just like the beat or the singing. Whatever it is, you may find yourself dancing better to a song you like.
