How Many Wiis Have Been Sold
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
Seeing how the system can still be hard to find in stores, you may be wonder how many Wiis have been sold since the console launched in 2006. As it turns out, the Wii is actually one of the most popular Nintendo home video game machines ever released.
A Staggering Nintendo Wii Launch
Even though the Nintendo Wii does not have some of the multimedia features that you may find on other consoles, like the ability to play DVDs, the Wii does have a healthy variety of titles that appeal to both hardcore gamers and casual players alike. This wasn't completely the case with the launch titles, but the system still sold like hotcakes.
For example, Nintendo proclaimed that 600,000 consoles were sold within the first eight days of the American launch. That works out to approximately 75,000 systems being sold each and every day in the first week. Even more impressive are the Japanese sales figures, because an estimated 370,000 consoles were sold in the first two days.
How Many Wiis Have Been Sold Worldwide?
Sales haven't really slowed too much since the Nintendo Wii first launched over two years ago. So, how many Wiis have been sold thus far?
According to the sales figures released by Nintendo, there have been over 20 million units shipped to the Americas since November 2006. This figure is accurate as of December 31, 2008. In Japan, over 7 million units have been shipped. Taking all other regions into consideration, like Europe and Australia, an additional 16 million consoles have been shipped. Most of these were not sold as Wii bundles, aside from the inclusion of Wii Sports and a controller.
Adding all of these figures together, we come to a grand total of 44.96 million Nintendo Wiis that have been shipped worldwide. While this may not directly answer the question of how many Wiis have been sold, the shipping number should be an approximate estimation and it should be reasonably accurate.
