How Do I Put Videos on My PSP
From LoveToKnow VideoGames
If you own a media device, then you won’t have a problem answering the question: "How do I put videos on my PSP?" But if the PSP is your only media player, and you are having trouble getting those movies or music videos onto the PSP, then follow the step by step directions below to start viewing your videos.
What You'll Need to Answer "How Do I Put Videos on My PSP?"
Before you go throwing any old video file onto your PSP, make sure you have the following items:
- The PSP. This is self-explanatory.
- A Sony Memory Stick with a good amount of storage. A two-hour movie will typically run about 350-400 Megabytes. If you use a 1 GB or 2 GB Memory Stick, you should be safe in getting a few movies on there at once.
- The .MP4 video files.
- Video conversion software to convert non-MP4 files to MP4, the format the PSP reads.
Files and Formats
The PSP plays only one video format: the MP4 file. MP4 movies can be relatively small files without losing the quality of the original video. Initially, when you first format a Sony Memory Stick via the PSP, you get folders for photos', music, game, and savedata. Unfortunately, there is no folder designated for video, but this is easy to fix.
Now if you don't have MP4 files, then you will need to download a converter. One of the easiest ones to use, which is designed to convert files that can be directly read by the PSP, is 3GP Converter. The program is free and can be found at 3GP Convertor. This is one the first things you'll need if you want to know how do I put videos on my PSP.
Installing the 3GP Convertor Program
After unzipping the program, run setup.exe. When you first load 3GP Converter, you'll notice that everything is in Japanese. That's okay, just click English. After you pick the language you want, then you need to pick a conversion setting. Pick MP4, for PSP (Direct, renamed). If you want your converted files to go in a specific directory on your computer, then click the Select button and pick a location.
Lastly, you can pick the frame rate and audio quality of your converted file. The better quality you want, the longer the program takes to convert and the bigger the output file.
3GP Convertor makes it easy to load your file in: all you need to do is drag and drop your video file into the section that says Drag and Drop Here. The process starts and soon you'll have an MP4 file ready for your PSP. NOTE: the completed file will have some weird name. Do not change this name because the PSP only reads the default converted file name.
Creating a Video Folder
Since there is no video folder on the Memory Stick, you need to make one. Hook your Sony PSP to the computer and open the PSP directory. You should see a directory called MP_ROOT. Click on that so you are in that directory. Now, make a new folder named 100MNV01. Verify that the path in your window reads E:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01. The drive letter (E:\) may be different, but the rest should be the same.
If not, start again and make sure you are in the MP_ROOT directory and not in the directory that contains the music, savedata, and photos folder.
Moving MP4 Files
In the newly created 100MNV01 folder, put your MP4 files. That's it! The .THM files don't need to be transferred as they are files created by the program. Unplug your PSP, then load the interface and select Video. Your files should be there, ready to play. They'll be named correctly, but if you aren't sure which file is which, a still of the video is displayed.
DVDs TO PSP
When you back up DVDs or download a digital copy from sanctioned discs that carry them, the files are usually in AVI format. These can be converted through 3GP Converter, but remember that a two hour movie will take up a good amount of space. You should get at least one movie on a 1 GB Memory Stick. You can lower the quality, but there's no reason to compromise sound and video quality, because the PSP produces an excellent picture with great sound. So are you able to answer the question, "How do I put videos on my PSP?" This article walked you through the steps you need to watch your favorite action flick on your PSP.
