Holiday 2006 Nintendo DS Video Game Gift Ideas
When it comes to choosing a present for your favorite Nintendo DS (or Nintendo DS Lite) owner, don't feel overwhelmed by the huge library available for the handheld system! We've broken down the gift guide into three parts: some of the best new games to hit the DS, some of the greatest classic titles, and a smattering of accessories that any DS owner would love to receive.
Hot Nintendo DS Games
Over the past few months, Nintendo has treated us to many new games for their portable "touching is good" system. Here are five that come highly recommended:
Star Fox Command
Fans of classic Star Fox gameplay (from the original SNES and Nintendo 64 versions) will instantly feel at home with Star Fox Command for the Nintendo DS. Unlike the GameCube "adventure" titles, this game is all about airborne battles. You get to control a number of different ships, and not just the Arwing that belongs to Fox McCloud. Along the way, you'll encounter (and take over the controls of) Slippy Toad, Falco Falcon, and even Star Wolf. The unique touchscreen interface is incredibly intuitive, and best of all, you can take your lazers online and battle out with Star Fox fans from all around the world using Nintendo's WiFi Connection! Dogfight lovers rejoice!
Elite Beat Agents
One of the least known but most enjoyed import titles from Japan for the Nintendo DS is Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. Elite Beat Agents is a spiritual sequel to the popular rhythm game, except it is in English and comes with popular English songs. If you're a fan of Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, and other similar music games, you'll instantly fall in love (and in rhythm) with Elite Beat Agents. Check out our full Elite Beat Agents review for more information on this fantastic title.
Mario Hoops: 3-on-3
Mario not only knows how to do the platformer thing. He's been known to pick up the tennis racket, golf club, and even kick around a soccer ball. His latest foray into the world of sports is Mario Hoops: 3-on-3. Naturally, this title makes use of the DS's unique touchscreen capabilities, giving you a fresh take on an old basketball formula. Unlock new characters, new courts, and new abilities. There are even Final Fantasy characters hidden within!
Final Fantasy 3
Kick it old school. RPG enthusiasts will quickly tell you that the benchmark in the genre is and always has been the Final Fantasy series. One of the first games in the series -- Final Fantasy 3 -- is now available on the Nintendo DS, except with jazzed up graphics and a whole new way to play. A must-have title for any RPG fan.
Bomberman Touch
Take the explosive action online with Bomberman Touch. This new title combines the classic grid gameplay with the ability to challenge people from all around the world. This is a great follow-up to the first Bomberman title for the Nintendo DS.
Nintendo DS Classics
The Nintendo DS has been on the market for a little while now, and as such, it boasts quite the expansive library. Here are some of the best games that have graced its screens during its short history.
- Mario Kart DS: Arguably the best game for the Nintendo DS, Mario Kart DS includes everything that has made the go-karting franchise such a hit, including tossing red shells, exciting drifting action, and plenty of characters and courses to unlock. This was the title that ushered in the Nintendo WiFi Connection and is still one of the most popular online DS games.
- Tetris DS: Adding several new variations to the tried and true formula, Tetris DS is a part of the "Touch Generations" line of games. You like puzzle games? You'll love Tetris DS.
- Animal Crossing: Wild World: Essentially a remake of the GameCube original, Animal Crossing: Wild World is one of the most popular DS games among girls. Life out a virtual life, collect furniture, make friends, pay off your mortgage, and even greet people online with the WiFi Connection.
Best Nintendo DS Accessories
To fully enjoy (and protect) the Nintendo DS experience, you may want to look into some accessories.
Unique Skins
Decal Girl has a wide range of skins for both the Nintendo DS and DS Lite. Customize your look and stand out from the crowd.
Protective Cases
Protect your gaming investment with a case. These come in a variety of materials, including metal, plastic, leather, nylon, and airform. An economical, yet very useful accessory for the DS.
Upgraded Stylus
The PDA Panache Stylus Upgrade will be met with much joy from any Nintendo DS Lite owner. Its metal construction is much stronger and sturdier than the plastic styli that come with the DS Lite.
