Get On Da Mic Review

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

When you watched 8 Mile with Eminem, did you suddenly get the urge to take your rapping skills to the streets and battle your way to fame and fortune? If you’re like me, then you wanted to, but living in the Midwest gives you little opportunity for an audience. So that’s why I picked up Get On Da Mic for the PS2.

The Gameplay

Using the included microphone (or a separate PS2 compatible mic), you must lip-sync your way from rap nothing to getting your own recording contract. You start in your own bathroom with yourself in the mirror as the audience and move on up to street corners to a stage at a local club, and eventually to a major concert. You can choose from a few rap personalities ranging from hardcore female to an Eminem look-alike to a Straight Outta Compton superstar.

Across the bottom of the screen are the lines for the rap song and they give you two lines at a time. The top one is the current line you should be rapping and the second line is what’s coming up. If it’s blank, it’s probably a break, the beginning, or the ending of the song. The more accurate you are the lighter the color of the word to let you know how you did if you need to compensate.

After the song, you get a score and a rating and any money or bonus money is added to your account. Then you can go and purchase additional clothing and bling bling, if that’s what you’re into.

The Graphics

The graphics are pretty plain. Since your basically doing karaoke, you just have to be able to read the words. The background animations move in time with the music and just like in Karaoke Revolution, the audience will either be pleased with your performance (they’ll start to clap and breakdance) or they will walk out and boo you.

The Music

Get On Da Mic has a lot of old school hip-hop and modern R&B songs. Biggie Smalls is in here as well as Snoop Dog. Like Missy Elliot and Black Eyed Peas, then this game’s for you. And don’t worry, there’s the old favorite, “Baby Got Back”. I’ve heard of most of the artists listed on the back of the game, but when I got into the game and heard some of the songs, I was lost. Really, the only songs I knew the words to were “Baby Got Back” and “The Humpty Dance”. But the game is fun and you’ll find yourself reciting the words in no time.

It’s Time to Battle

Besides the career mode, you can battle it out with another player. How it works is when you start rapping your song, the game will warn you when it’s time for the other player to step in and take over. Usually this happens after a verse or chorus. You are both scored on the same mechanics so there’s no easy way to win.

There is also a freestyle mode in Get On Da Mic. Some of the best DJs created some fresh 1-2 minute beats that you can freestyle to. No words, just your skills. It’s similar to the scene in 8 mile where the battle-rapping occurred. If you really want to impress your friends, then try that mode on for size. There’s no scoring, just the admiration or ridicule of your friends.

Thompson’s Two Cents

If you’ve played Karaoke Revolution and like it and have a fondness for hip-hop, then this game is a no-brainer for you. Get On Da Mic offers thousands of combinations to personalize your characters with brand labels and cool songs to battle to.

So come on, you know you want to throw down some tight rhymes.
