Free Wii Plastic Condom/Cover

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

By now, you know that a free Wii plastic condom/cover is the best way to protect your Wiimote and your plasma or LCD television. Early on in the Wii's life, there were many issues with broken wriststraps and flying Wiimotes launching into flat-screen TVs, shattering screens and breaking controllers. Nintendo quickly redesigned the wriststrap so it stayed securely around your wrist and realized that they needed to reestablish gamer trust with a free Wii plastic condom/cover.

Third Party Covers

Third party covers have been available since the launch of the Wii, but they have been basic covers showcasing aesthetics rather than safety and protection. Most of the non-Nintendo covers are thin skins that really don't protect the remote, but they do come in a variety of fun colors and themes. For instance, if you live in Chicago and are a Bears fan, then you can get a 2-pack of covers: one with a Bears theme and one with a Packers theme. Bring on the rivalry on the field and on the Wii.

Nintendo's Free Wii Plastic Condom/Cover Design

Nintendo's free Wii plastic condom/cover is built for comfort and safety. At first glance, it looks cumbersome and large, but when you slip it on and feel it for the first time, you know it's for real. The top portion that goes around the IR end is bulbous and is designed to absorb most of the impact since remotes that have flown from hands had that end smack against TVs. There is a little opening at the top so the IR signal can reach the Wii sensor bar.

Moving down, there is a rectangular gap so the digital pad and A button can be accessed and below that, a small rubber bar that that goes between the A button and the '+', '-', and Home buttons. This is to keep the cover even more secure and halt slippage of the cover. From that point to the bottom of the cover is a large opening so you can hit the '1' and '2' buttons, see the Wiimote indicators, and hear the internal speaker. Lastly, there is a opening to slide the wriststrap through and a bendable tab to insert into the Nunchuck port to keep it from getting dirty.

Underneath, everything is covered except for the portion open for the trigger. The clear, plastic cover feels just right in your hands, and after a few sessions getting used to it, you should find that it feels like a natural accessory that you've been using for years.

The Easiest Way to Put on the Cover

Yes, there is an easy and a hard way to put on the free Wii plastic condom/cover. Follow these steps, especially if you are putting one on for the first time:

  1. Make sure your Wii is off or you complete the following in another room away from the Wii bar, because as you insert the Wiimote, buttons will be pressed and you may inadvertently reset your Wii!
  2. Insert the top end right below the small, thin bar until it is below the A button.
  3. Take the strap and feed it through the hole at the bottom of the cover and pull it through.
  4. Now, holding the strap in your right hand and holding the Wiimote in your left hand, pull the strap as you push/slide the cover up until the bottom part of the Wiimote falls snugly into place.

Where to Get the Covers

For about a year, Nintendo has included the covers with their system. If you purchased an early system, then you can still get a plastic condom/cover. Go to the jacket request page of their website, enter in your Wii serial number, and how many covers you need (up to 4). It may take up to 10 days to receive your item. Remember that the Wiimote is a sensitive item even with the covers and that internal parts can still jar loose if slammed into something. Keep the strap on your wrist and your grip secure, especially when bowling.
