Many gamers agree that as much as it is fun to beat up monsters and get the bad guys, RPGs are mostly about the story line. A role playing gamer is assuming the role of one or more characters. This is mostly true for the tabletop versions. Ray Hatton, a 20-year-old avid RPG player in Lafayette, LA, says that video games are more fun when, inside the game play, you have more choices. “In some games, you may have only one direction to go, forward. In an RPG, you can go anywhere you want, even if there is a story line you’ll be following along.”

This also makes for repeated fun with some RPGs. “You could go through the entire game and never visit half of the things there are to see and do,” Ray commented. “You just go back and play again.”

If there are so many ways to get through the game, how do you see it all?

The Game Guides

Like with most games, an RPG video game often results in the creation of game guides. These guides reveal all areas of the game. They also lead you through the game, step by step, toward the ending.

According to comments from a video game message board, there are mixed feelings about game guides. Everyone seems to appreciate the existence of game guides, but how people use them vary. Some only use the guides when they feel they are stuck in the game and do not know where to go next. Others use them extensively until they have found everything the guide tells them to get. Some consider following this step by step guide through every detail "cheating."

In the end, everyone agrees if a player thinks it is fun, that’s all that matters, whether they use the guides thoroughly or not. “I’ve played a whole game through, only using the guide for assistance, and then went back and followed the game as the guide shows it. That way, it doesn’t quite ruin the game ending or the challenge for me, but it does reveal all those things I never would have found on my own,” says Ray.

There are many free online RPG games, just as there are many free puzzle games. If you are new to RPGs, it won’t take long to learn about them. There are many online communities and chatrooms that may assist you by answering questions.
