Family Guy Video Game

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

The Family Guy video game was released in 2006 by 2K Games and is based on the Fox cartoon series Family Guy. You can purchase the game for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PSP systems.

Characters

All the popular characters are in the game, but only three are playable: Brian, Stewie, and Peter. Each character plays differently. For example, Stewie's porton is played like a shooter, while Brian has stealth qualities like Metal Gear Solid. Peter just goes around beating people up like Double Dragon. As you play each character, you will also encounter any of the numerous mini-games through the game which give each main character a special power.

Stories in the Family Guy Video Game

There are three different stories that seem just as random as if you were watching the show.

Brian is accused of impregnating Seabreeze (again) and must clear his name. In order to do that, he must follow the scent of Seabreeze's genitals. The scent takes Brian to many locations, but eventually to the Quahog Dog Races, where Brian must try to enter the race to weed out the father of the puppies, which is Quagmire.

Stewie has to thwart the plans of world domination of his half-brother Bertram. Bertram and Stewie go through different scenarios where Bertram kidnaps Rupert (Stewie's stuffed toy) and attempts to launch a rocket. Stewie battles with Bertram on the playground and soon wins, saving Rupert and the world.

Peter thinks Mr. Belvedere has kidnapped his family and sets off across town beating people up in order to rescue them. He repeatedly gets hit in the head, which changes his fighting style and changes some of the animation of his movements. Mr. Belvedere is actually the Giant Chicken and of course, the fight ensues. If you are any fan of Family Guy, then you can probably figure out what happens.

Graphics

Because not a lot of processing power is needed, you will find the graphics follow the same style as the show. As a matter of fact, it looks like you are play one long episode of Family Guy. The cut scenes are short clips of some of the best moments of the episodes and are strategically placed throughout the game to make it appear that they fit into the story. The PSP version of the game has slightly inferior graphics when compared to its console counterparts, but the difference is very slight.

Negatives

The game has horrendous controls and spotty AI. It also gets rather boring after a while. You essentially perform the same actions in order to achieve repeating goals. It can be said it's a plus that the game follows the Family Guy universe to a 't': there's nothing new in the game that you can't find by watching the show. The last negative is that the game may take you a few hours to beat; and that's with going through the game with all three playable characters.

Positives

Hey, it's a Family Guy video game. The humor is intact, the cultural references are all there, and you can also fight the Giant Chicken. What more do you need than that?

Family Guy Style

You need to know Family Guy if you are to understand how to proceed in the game or understand the hundreds of references splattered about. It's just not good enough to have watched one or two episodes because the game references episodes up to and including 2006.

If you have seen the show and were offended by the humor, then you will not like this game. The humor is the main reason the show is still running. The constant flashbacks, obscure pop culture references, and the innate ability to be funny to the point of being disgusting drives the show to its success. Don't think there aren't disgusting things in the show and the game!

Purchase this game if you feel the need to control some aspect of Quahog and you want a little diversion from just watching Family Guy on television.
