Downloading video games is the quickest way to get your gaming fix. There are tens of thousands of games available on the internet, from complex and engaging role playing games to simple Tic Tac Toe variants. With so many games to choose from, it's easy to fill a hard drive of any size.
Types of Video Games To Download
Genres aside, there are basically three types of video games you can download.
Commercial - These games are created by teams of paid programmers, artists and writers in studios around the world. Commercial games usually feature free demos, portions of the game available for free, or time-limited versions of their games you can download and evaluate. If you like the game, you can purchase it. Otherwise just erase that waste of hard drive space and find another game to download!
Shareware - Shareware games are similar to commercial games except they are often made by smaller independent developers. Shareware games on the whole cost less than commercial games and are not usually available on store shelves. Download trial versions of the game, evaluate and purchase if you liked the game.
Freeware - The "free" in freeware is commonly mistaken as meaning "you don't have to pay anything". While this is certainly true, as freeware games are available at no cost, the "free" actually stands for "free for anyone to use, modify or play". No restrictions, essentially. Freeware games are created by small groups of gamers, usually not studios or organized companies, and often by solo programmers. You can download and distribute freeware games free of charge. Many great games have been released under the freeware license.

Game Hippo - Game Hippo is a large database of mostly freeware titles. The archives are searchable and very well organized.
Download.com - This child of CNET offers a large selection of video games to download, including freeware, shareware, commercial demos and more. Games are added daily, so keep watching this high-quality site.
Caiman - The underdog of video game download sites, Caiman has one of the most useful category indexes around. Games aren't just piled into genre links (puzzle, action, RPG, etc.), rather they are intelligently linked by game type. Want a Tetris-like puzzler? There's a category for that. How about a line-up styled game? Hacked versions of Super Mario Bros.? Freeware gems are abound in this website.
