Console Games

From LoveToKnow VideoGames

In the world of video games, there are three main roads you can traverse: computers, consoles, and portable systems. Of course you don't have to choose one (as if that were even an option). Unless you have a morbid fear of sitting at a desk or can't stand holding anything between two hands, you'll choose your favorite form of gaming by one major consideration: the games.

Console Games

There are thousands of games that have been produced for home console systems over the years. The three systems currently available and supported by games makers are the Microsoft Xbox, the Nintendo GameCube and the Sony PlayStation 2. Microsoft has recently released the Xbox 360, a new console with better gaming capabilities than the Xbox. However, developers will still support the Xbox for some time and the Xbox 360 offers limited backwards compatibility. For the purposes of this article, both systems will be lumped under the term "Xbox".

Most popular console games are released for all three systems. Exclusive titles are rarer but often the deciding factor in buying a system. If you want lots of Final Fantasy Games, you have to buy a PlayStation 2. If you like Halo, the Xbox is your system. If Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid are your cups of tea, you'll need a GameCube.

Console Games -- What To Expect

There have been dozens of video game console systems on the market since gaming became a big business. From the original Pong console to the Atari 2600, the Nintendo Entertainment System to the 3DO. Systems such as the Neo-Geo were havens for Japanese fighting games, while the Super Nintendo was a stomping ground for the heavy hitters in the industry. Consoles tend to draw a certain flavor of games. The three current batters share many titles but have their own distinct game-types that keep them distinct.

Microsoft Xbox

The Xbox receives less support from Japanese developers than the other two biggies, so don't expect too many role playing games. The first person shooter (FPS) genre and strategy titles seem to dominate the lineup. The Xbox is home to Halo and Halo 2, FPS games with remarkably realistic physics.

Sony PlayStation 2

The PS2 boasts a number of exclusive games and the most expansive library of the big three. The most popular games almost always hit the PS2, and Japanese games brought overseas will definitely appear on this platform. A few quiet cult favorites such as Shadow of the Colossus and We Love Katamari Damacy are PS2 exclusives.

Nintendo GameCube

Though it has a somewhat smaller library of games, the GameCube is home to a large number of amazing games and recognizable franchises. It will also house the most anticipated game of 2005/2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Any fan of a Nintendo game, such as Metroid, Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin and more, should put the GameCube at the top of the wanted list.
