What Defines a Video Game?

A video game is any interactive electronic entertainment that simulates a game environment. Video games allow a player to manipulate parts of a virtual universe to reach a goal or complete an objective. The virtual world may range from an immersive experience in real-time 3D to flat worlds where goals are clear-cut and easily obtainable.

Video Games History

The exact origin of video games is somewhat debatable. The first interactive electronic entertainment came around in the 1950's with a few crude games simulating tennis and tic-tac-toe. These ideas were largely ignored but sparked a few interested geeks to pursue the idea. Then, in the 1970's, arcade video games and even a home-based gaming system finally hit the market. Sales were tepid at first but gradually increased into the early 80's as a few new companies jumped on the bandwagon.

A short slump in western video game sales hit in the early to mid-80's. But then the Nintendo Entertainment System hit stores and sparked the gaming revolution we are all still spinning in today. Video games suddenly became a popular household activity for people of all ages. And with amazing games such as Tetris, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros., it's no wonder video games were a big hit.

Video Games of Today

Most video gamers of today are between the ages of 15 and 35 and are male. There is a growing surge of other demographics turning an interested eye to the video game world, however, and many developers can see this. Casual gamers are beginning to take the business by storm as they pay online website to play simple, derivative puzzle games that require no special software and have a very thin learning curve. These people along with avid video gamers make up a fairly small but dedicated consumer base that fuels the video game industry of today.
