PlayStation 2 Video Game Reviews

Sony's PlayStation 2 is the follow-up to the massively popular PlayStation console. The PS2 is the most popular video gaming system on the market today (with the possible exception of the handheld Game Boy Advance). The PlayStation 2 has an enormous library of thousands of games by developers from around the world, especially Japan. Because of the strong games lineup, including titles such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and the Final Fantasy series of games, the PS2 hit the market hard and sallied legions of gamers to its grasp.

The PS2 Today

The original PlayStation was intended to be an add-on to Nintendo's SNES system. When the deal fell through, Sony released the system as a stand-alone console. It was a hit, and the PS2 followed several years later riding on the heels of its success.

The PS2 features powerful hardware and utilizes DVD-format discs for games. The system can play DVD movies on your TV. The impending release of the PlayStation 3 promises to upgrade the PS2 hardware ten times over to deliver a complete home entertainment package. The PS3 will also be backwards compatible with older PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, meaning your old favorites will stick around for quite some time.

PlayStation 2 Games

The PlayStation 2 is home to a number of quirky Japanese titles that have made a surprising impact in the western market. Katamari Damacy, the hit game from Namco, and its sequel We Love Katamari are PS2 exclusives. The games feature the Prince of the Universe who must roll everything on earth into one gigantic ball. And... that's the gist of it! The strangeness of the game combined with the new concept made it an instant hit and another great reason to own PS2.

Grand Theft Auto began its life on the PC but quickly moved to the PlayStation consoles when Sony struck a deal with the game's publisher. It has caused quite a lot of controversy with its gratuitous violence and recently discovered hidden sex scene. However, the series is one of the best-selling franchises available today, despite of (or because of) the publicity.

Other notable PlayStation 2 games are ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, both described as cult-hit "art" games with amazing graphics and interesting gameplay.
